What makes them believe London is the centre of the universe and that we are all desperate to get there fast, well within sight as it stops short of London itself.
Well, just across the border from you, there's a lot of (possibly sensible folk) who've never been to London nor have any wish to!

Nobody proposes taking it to your logical extreme.
I'd say a blanket 20 mph speed limit was extreme. I think that over 100,000 people in Walws signing that petition would aaso agree. I expect that some of them probably even think Jeremy of Corbynshire should be PM.

Put them on the road instead , with 20 limits and more cycle/scooter lanes

These are already tightly controlled, didn't you know?

They are only doing it from existing 30 to 20mph. Not universal. It won't make much difference to journey times but will reduce accidents and encourage other users of the roads.
It's particularly bad in our village with a 30 limit and narrow streets sometimes with narrow to non existant pavements. Too dangerous for kids to walk to school and they organise a "walking bus" group walk with lots of yellow hazard jackets at front and back. No doubt some motorists see this as a gross intrusion on their freedom to do just what they like.
Missing the point again, Jacob. Gambling, alcohol, tobacco...tightl;y controlled...yes...but we still have that freedom of choice.

Then stop moaning about 20mph and make some points about things that really matter to you instead of using a perfectly sensible life saving initiative to grind an axe over we know not what.
It's about educating drivers to drive for the weather and road conditions. A blanket limit does SFA. I'm tempted the next time I drive in Wales and happen to be in a 20mph zone to drive at 10 mph. Must be safer for pedestrians surely?

Yes, of course. Now please explain that to my wife and suggest what she should have done in the circumstances. The A69 has very few overtaking places between Hexham and Carlisle. There are two hills where there are two lanes on the upslope. We know that drivers will always 'push it' and try and get past that last lorry before it goes back to single file. So she is driving up that hill at 60mph...the speed limit..and can safely overtake the last lorry before the single file.

In her rear mirror she sees White Man in a Van hammering along behind her and realises that unless she shoves her foot down (and break the speed limit) that he is going to be left high and dry and likely have a head-on collision with oncoming traffic. So she does. There was a bloody portable speed check van just over the brow of the hill, she got done and did the Naughty Boys and Girls course.

Next time, she's going to let him have that Head On and sod it.

It's NOT about speed limits. It is about the wrong speed, the wrong place, the wrong weather and road conditions. End of.
But that's unworkable, obviously. In the absence of corroborated video evidence, anyone can come up with some reason to justify speeding. Everybody seems to think that they are exceptional drivers, and thus can safely and legitimately exceed the speed limits because of road condition, weather, what their horoscope said that morning, but it's a) b0ll0cks, and b) unworkable. I feel sorry for your wife.

Do I even need to answer that?

You have the freedom of choice to drive too, but in a tightly controlled manner.

Actually it was a post highlighting the fact that of the controversial topics section, Jacob is responsible for over 70% of all the threads.

But I changed my mind. I though some might take it that Jacob was argumentative.
I didn't start this thread and I haven't said anything controversial in it.
Are you bored?
Is that why you are trying to be controversial yourself? Why not try to say something interesting instead? 🤣

But it is symptomatic of a society which seeks to control all activity, however trivial, through regulation, legislation and ultimately enforcement.
Once society accepts that as norm then we are on a slow road to dictatorship, maybe 1984 comes to fruition and Orwell just got the date wrong.

Nobody is seeking "to control all activity, however trivial" - only those where high risk is involved to individuals and especially to other non participants.
Come to think there are more people seeking the opposite; zero control in some areas: de -regulation, free markets etc. but they tend to be pathetic nutters like Liz Truss! 🤣

If people had any common sense they wouldn't be living in n Wales in the first place.
Two of my daughters have moved to Wales. Both received bursaries from the Welsh government to study nursing. The fact that the Welsh government is sensible enough to attract young people to live and work in Wales through excellent policies on nursing education and now this very forward looking policy on road safety I think it’s now a case of those with more common sense moving to Wales.

Lived in Wales for five years and regularly visited since a kid. Lovely place, Britains best kept secret, did think of retiring back there again, might do yet.
