When working on a project.....

When working on a project and you need a jig that then becomes another project in it's self. I am making a WW2 half track and it requires two front wheels and they need to have some tyre treads cut into them. Well it took a week to make this and luckily I had all the bits and pieces hiding in the shed from those little draws of bits I had saved with those famous words "I'll keep that it may come in handy someday" and the wood from the scrap bin.

As you can see from the pictures it is designed to take a Dremel or a hand piece from one of my other machines.

On the jig is a test piece of pine which I used to see

1. to see if it works

2. so I did not muck up the wheels while getting the hang of it

And the end result of what the jig is used for

Thank you all. Just out of interest each wheel has 10 parts. And the chassis as you see it there I lost count at 115 bits made for it and still have 62 track links 62 track guides and 62 pins and that is before I even think about the superstructure

The indexer is made from 4 pieces of plastic glued together and when dry I printed a full protractor type image with only two lines crossing in the centre, if you get one that has multiple lines it makes it very hard to find exact centre. I stick this to the disc and centre punched the centre through the paper and all the 36 points I wanted. I drew a circle using the centre just to the outside of all of the other marks so that when the paper is removed you can see all of these, next was to very carefully drill a hole in the centre at 1/4" turn the blank to within a hairs width of the marks so they are very close to the outer edge with a fine saw blade the type used by modellers to cut a line across the outer edge this makes it easy for a triangular needle file to start. each one is filed to the depth of the file. It sounds a lot but did not take that long.

It was the construction that took the time and getting everything to sit snug but not tight especially where things had to move without any free play
