What is this tool???

Found this on the road side the other day. Was expecting it to be very heavy but it's made from Ali so weighs nothing.


My ideas are a large possibly two man screw driver for railways, electrical, water???

It's about 620 long by 450 wide and I'm guessing the part missing would be identical to the other side with a rubber grip.

That said, they usually have wheeled thingys nowadays, elf'n'safety 'n'all, and an alloy casting wouldn't be very strong either.

[edit] Just noticed you say there's a bit broken off. If it was symmetrical, it wouldn't be a lifter. I was assuming the bit opposite the handle was a hook, rather than another handle.[/]

Only a guess, being aluminium an unusual material for a tool I think it could be to make it spark proof for use working with gas mains.

Seems to have very little wear. Signs of use but no tell-tale scrape or scratch marks.

If you hold the plastic covered part - does it feel like a decent attempt at a handgrip? Is it at all comfortable? Is it clearly for use in one direction / plane? Might give some clues.

Cant see any woodworking application in it but having some scrap aluminium about can be useful at times.

It’s for dowsing water mains however since it’s broken it’s a wall hanger now.

Sorry, I've got no clue.
It's a bit modern and too specialist to be easily recognised by anyone yet, so I'd guess it's for gas pipelines or similar, as suggested already, but I couldn't say at all.

My guess is something water related - aluminium can create a spark when it hits rust (thermite reaction) so not ideal on gas systems. We've been stopped from using our aluminium steps in EXE areas on sites because of this.

Can it actually create a spark? I thought you needed crazy amounts of heat to get a thermite reaction going in the first place.

Is it aluminium or is it galvanized? From the picture I'd say the latter?
