Weather Stations.....

Hi all....

OK... so i'm interested in getting one of these weather station thing-a-ma-jigs... but which one...?

Anyone here got any experiences of them..?

Just re-watched the YouTube review when the Gadget Show did a bit on them, and still none the wiser as they only tested 3 out of the billions there seem to be on sale.

The only places i've seen them for sale is in garden centers.... makes sense i 'spose :?

Budget..? well.... not the cheapest of cheap, and certainly not looking to spend £hundred's either.

The missus said that a 'sun rise' & 'sun set' feature would be handy for her.... she's the gardener....

Although i've done loads of googling there doesn't seem to be a site (that i've found) that lists all the makes/models with a check list etc.. like what you can find at Carphonewarehouse for phones, or John Lewis for washing machines...

Thought i'd maybe pop into my local Maplins later and have a look.

Other than that i'm open to suggestions.....

Cheap ones .... Are well cheap same as wood tools

Depends what you want to do with the data and what you want to measure ?

My first one was from Maplins which worked ok but was limited what you could do with the data and could only be viewed on the display

Andy.... i looked at the Davis one's, they're very nice, and i'm sure very accurate too, but to be honest all i wanted was a 'fairly' accurate one that i/we could gaze at as we walked past it.... the same as we do the barometer, just a bit more 'high-tech', seeing as we're now living in the 21st century... :mrgreen:

John Lewis do a few Oregon Scientific ones.

I see Maplin does Weather stations and Professional Weather stations.

I don't know whether they have sunrise and sunset times but you can get that sort of information from the internet.

Very similar to what I had bought in the late 90's. By the way not sure if this one does it, but mine would bleep every 10 or so seconds when the atmospheric pressure dropped below a certain point (thunder/lightning warning) Took me months to work out what it was beeping for. :roll:

What I forgot to mention is that some of them you can add bits to. ie buy a base station then at when ever you can add an outdoor sensor etc. Keeps the cost down a bit and lets you see how you get on. (you know what hobbies are like when you start sliding down a slippery slope. :wink:

I used to have a little weather station that I could access via the computer but gradually bits stopped working or became inaccurate. I was about to buy another then realised there are many on-line and found a couple within a mile. So I just access those via the computer - keeping them running is someone else's problem.

Just do a search for weather station + your locality. There's a whole bunch in and around Southampton there might be one just up the road from you.

I have a digital barometer one which gives an indication of the likely weather and I also have a wireless one that records the outside temperature.

But generally I use the weather Apps on my phone including a Radar one which shows (amongst other things) the expected rain showers on the move and forecasts their track for about 90mins ahead.

The BBC has localised forecasts,including a very nice way of indicating temperature rise and fall.

Shame to interrupt the mirth, but has anyone with one of the electronic weather stations had problems with readings when the temperature drops below freezing? I've got one called MeteoPro (I think, but it seems like a clone/rip-off of various others). Problem is that when temperature drops to about -3 or 4C (not uncommon up here ) the outside sensors stop working. Have tried various different sorts of battery, but the problem still persists. Bought secondhand, so no Sale of Goods act applies!

If your MeteoPro unit is an Oregon Scientific jobbie then from the treatment I had when I had a problem with some of their gear I wouldn't hold too many hopes for help from the company!

When I asked for help from Origan so called Scientific all I can say is that they were LESS than helpful and I would not touch their stuff with a blo-ody long barge pole now!!!!!

Right..... well we've done some searching around local shops (read garden centres), a local Maplins and online too.

And think it's been narrowed down to possibly/probably this one....
