Bad news for the environment. While China, whatever one might think of the regime, may have the most coal-fired power stations, it is pushing ahead with renewable energy. Trump however will likely rip up any existing agreements in that regard.
Yup. Really not good. Wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't even push carbon capture. Who knows.

It will lead to a failure to understand the lives and requirements of that section of the population, making those people swing to an ever increasingly more extreme(?) position. That will likely strengthen the view of those who oppose them that they are indecent, pushing them further and further away
I agree, Starmer played a clever strategy of avoiding Tory traps and attack lines. It’s why Starmer didn’t challenge brexit or Rwanda policy

Democrats were wrong to attack Trump as a fascist, even though he does share features with it.

there is the possibility to engage those people and finding common ground for a positive future relationship
I disagree, unfortunately social media has created a way for lthere morally corrupt to spread lies faster than the truth can catch up.

Until that is regulated or mainstream media hold people to account we won’t see and end to liars winning power.

A Trump win will mean the growth of right wing populists across Europe and more racism, more xenophobia, more hate

Kamala relied too heavily on celebrity endorsements and had no real political acumen, once her auto-cue cut out it was like somebody had pulled out her power cable, you'd be surprised but even Americans can see through that.

Trump however despite being a questionable person is an excellent public speaker and knows how to push the right buttons to get support, he will always push past a weak opponent like Kamala.

What are the reasons and the preceeding events that have lead seemingly the majority of the voting US population opting for a Trump 2nd term? Once that is explored and understood, rather than dismissed as the result of simply poor education or moral degradation, there is the possibility to engage those people and finding common ground for a positive future relationship.
To understand that vote, you're going to have to explore the studies of various, largely academic/ left-leaning commentators who analyse the ways in which ideology (constructed false-consciousness) operates. I'm afraid you'll have to look at post-Marxist research to get that. That'll lead you down the path of mass media, to an understanding of how popular consciousness is constructed to the advantage of a few. Some people like to scoff at media studies and the like, but that's where the answer lies. Once you have a failing economy and advanced system of misinformation, you can end up with all sorts of nonsense.

But they were the ones who voted him in? Who am I supposed to blame? Putin?

No

Hang on

They voted in what they saw as the "least bad" - and for Harris to be worse than Trump she had to be seen as really, really bad - which she was.

Had the Democrats selected a decent candidate the outcome might have been different.

So, Elon Musk is now running the US.
Interesting to speculate how much influence he had on the win.

I've been listening to The Rest is Politics America podcast a bit, with US political journalist Katty Kay and 5 minute press officer Anthony Scarramuci (sp?). It's fairly pointless listen really because it's 90 per cent a Scarramuci anti-Trump echo chamber. But one thing Scarramuci regularly says is that the knives will be out for people like him, turncoats etc., who Trump will have a special enmity for.

I think it will be interesting to see how that aspect pans out. If we start seeing these witch hunts and people start actively, popularly supporting them, then we will really know how far down the road to utter f**kwittery the US has gone.

Gosh, 64 pages and 1,293 repetitive posts, none of which have any bearing on the outcome.

Going round in futile circles like mice in a wheel.

At this rate, this thread is destined to have a longer run than 'The Mousetrap' In the West End.

Brings to mind the lyrics of 'Talking Heads' 'Psycho Killer':

I can't seem to face up to the facts
I'm tense and nervous and I can't relax
I can't sleep 'cause my bed's on fire
Don't touch me, I'm a real live wire

You start a conversation, you can't even finish it
You're talking a lot, but you're not saying anything
When I have nothing to say, my lips are sealed
Say something once, why say it again?

Ho hum .

Hurricanes in Washington cause slight drizzle in Cottingham.

Trump is a thoroughly nasty piece of work - he bears grudges and will be vindictive for sure.

Another reason why he will be bad for Ukraine - who refused to ditch the dirt on the Biden Crime family in 2020.

Well if it's Trump then that

At the end of the day most of the things we do and say have very little effect on the outcome. You could say the same about TV shows for example, there are pretty much no stories that haven't been written but we still watch and talk about them.

I'm confused as although he is currently winning there are still enough places for Kamala to Win. How likely that is is up for debate but how can the BBC say its over before the final results??? If by some miracle Kamala wins those states then there will be chaos.

Not unusual for TV channels to do that. They get to a degree of certainty and call it.

Don't get my hopes up 🤣
