I have been looking at one of these for a while, I have managed to think of about 4 or 5 different applications that I could use it for. I am frequently pulling together makeshift holding/clamping devices for certain jobs that the vice can't handle. I emailed Axmister asking about the pros and cons of the std dogs and twist dogs but they closed my query without responding, I'll get it off Amazon if I decide to buy ! - Any users of this on the forum and are the twist dogs worteh the extra ?

Buy what you want, but could I suggest an alternative...

An mft style top from eBay or elsewhere. Cost probably £50-60.
Some dogs from benchdogs. They do a range and it is worth looking at the range and what you need.

Make or buy some sawhorses to put it on.

What you will lose with this is the vertical clamping faces. You could make something to take care of this aspect of it is something that you need.

It's a good alternative, thanks and worth considering.

However, I work full time and my time in the workshop is very limited, restricted to about 3 or 4 hours on a Saturday and Sunday. I already spend 50% or of my time making jigs and not actually creating anything. I'll investigate it though. The trestles that come with it I know are just above useless and it needs a bespoke bench to sit on.

On my mft setup, I use some Stanley fatmax saw horses. They are not the cheapest ones that they did, and are not the best available but they are perfectly adequate. I wanted the legs to be able to accommodate uneven ground which made them more expensive. I use 2 pieces of CLS timber between the two to support the top.

To clamp to the face, it only needs a couple of holes in the cls to pass a clamp through, or a surface toggle clamp.

I bought a MFT top from a CNC company, it's a good fit for my current bench as I'll be able to make a frame and won't have any overhang unless I need it. I am undecided on the depth of frame. I was thinking 2" or 3" any higher and I'll be reaching. Any thoughts, 2" or 3" ?
