Oak segmented urn. 24 inches high 16 inches diameter. This was a bit of an exercise using up some oak I bought from a closing down of a flooring company. It could also be how many uses for bike inner tubes
The rings are glued up using a fibre tape and then several wraps of a bike inner tube to pull tight
The first 8 rings were turned in 1 go on a faceplate and then extra rings were added one at a time to reduce the amount of hollowing
I find bike inner tubed when really stretched provide really good clamping pressure.
Once on to the neck of the urn the rings were first roughly cored in some button jaws with a sacrificial piece of ply. I could then use the rough turned core to align with the turned inside of the urn, which only leaves a couple of mm tidying up. Acces to the inside is quite tight, with the tailstock in there.
I also turned a tapered bung to fit into the neck so I could bring the tailstock up. I had to do 3 of these as the length grew. I finished the inside as I went along. I found that once the neck was over about 5 inches I started to get chatter without the tailstock.
Once everything was finished, I unscrewed from the faceplate and mounted on a chuck to allow me to final turn the base ring which had been left as an octogon so the screw holes that were in the corners
