Who's had their tonsils removed :?:

How long did it hurt for :?:

I am 49 Years old and a few Months ago I had Tonsilitis accompanied by a Quinsy (Abcess) this has led to the removal of my Tonsils last Tuesday, 'don't worry' they said 'it'll only be sore for a few days',

Well, how long is a few Days, cuz it hurts more than ever, and I only get a few hours sleep, in my book a few is Three.

Tell you what, I won't have em out again

My mum did! She had them out when she was about 8, but they left part of them in and they grew back!
She had them done again when she was 14...
Andy

Oh no, I didn't want to hear that, I hope that only happens in Children, I'm scared now, i'll be having nightmares ](*,) [-o<

And to add a little relief to this thread...

John was awakened in the middle of the night by his wife, complaining of severe pain from what she thought was tonsillitis.

After finding the number for his Doctor, the conversation went as follows:

John - "Hi Doc, it's John Smith from 74 Chestnut Close...can you come over and give my wife something...she thinks she's got a bad case of Tonsillitis."

Doctor - "That's impossible John, I removed you wife's tonsils roughly seven years ago...in all my years as a Doctor, I've never heard of anyone having another set of tonsils!"

John - "Yeah Doc, but have you ever heard of anyone having another WIFE?"

:D

I had mine out when I was 7, and it hurt for at least 2 weeks. I seem to remember that the pain was unbearable for most of this time. Mind you, the reason for this might have had something to do with the fact that the doctor told my mum and dad to give me ice cream when it hurt, and I loved Mr Whippy ice cream. So when they asked me how I felt each day, I told them the truth   :^o :^o :^o

Seriously mate I cannot remember, but I do hope you get better soon.

Cheers

Mike

Hi Martin,

I was unsure whether to tell you this story as it might worry you a bit, but then I thought what the hell. :D

My sister had her tonsils removed about three years ago. She had the usual pain after the operation. About 3 days passed and the pain kept getting worse. She also developed terrible bad breath. We could smell it from the other side of the room. She went back to hospital, and it was decided she had an infection. They prescribed her some antibiotics and sent her home. However the pain and smell did not get any better. Then, in the middle of the night, she woke up in a pool of blood. She had haemorrhaged. The amount of blood was frightening. She was literally filling a bucket with the blood streaming from her mouth. An ambulance was called and she was blue lighted to hospital. They cauterised her mouth with cocaine and the bleeding stopped. It turned out that she had contracted MRSA in the wound. She is a nurse and quite likely carries MRSA all the time.

Don't have nightmares!

Ooooooohhh ya sausage, glad you told me that Simon, if i'm aware of these things I can keep tabs on the situation, by the way i'm off to the docs first thing. Say aahhh :tongue9:

I was knocked down when I was a kid in the 1940's and taken to hospital. The kid in the bed opposite me inthe ward was taken for what we were told was an X-ray. He came back screaming with a bloody cloth round his throat and some blood round his mouth, terrifying. Later that day a nurse came and told me I had to go for an X-ray!!!. It took two nurses to get me onto the trolley. Luckily it was just an X-ray.

Had mine out when I was 12 and from recollection it was unpleasant for about a week. Gargling with salty water to stop any infection was a little rough but everything was fine after a week and it was better than getting an infection and being sore for months.

Hope it all goes well and wish you a speedy recovery!

Thanks, I'm sure that it just takes longer to heal when you're older, anyway can feel an improvement today :D still bloomin hurts though.

Further to Mickster's post...

You'd better believe that doctors can remove the same item twice. My first wife had an emergency appendectomy in 1977 in a hospital in Berkshire. In 1979 she was rushed into hospital in pain, this time in Scotland, and they removed her appendix! Two surgeons at almost opposite ends of the country, both claiming to have done the same operation. And, it was in her medical records that I got hold of after she died from cancer in 1986 - and her cancer came, you know where - at the site of her appendix! Weird or what?

Doctors are just 'body engineers' after all. They do what they can with a complex structure and quite often they're just as in the dark as you are. I come from a family with a lot of medics in it!

Me. I had them out as an adult.

Like someone above, mine got infected. Get someone to keep tabs on bad breath. Its a "smell if from the other side of the room" type smell.

Get straight down the doctors if that happens, and you should get some antibiotics. I was alo leaking blood after they were infected.

I don't think it kept me awake particularly, but definately very hard to swallow for a week or two, and would recommend paracetamol and Ibuprofen. Not helped by the list of wholemeal bread, cornflakes, musli and various other crunchy / hard foods to help "wear on the scabs".

I found I tired easily for at least 8 weeks afterwards.

Hope that helps.

Everything helps Adam, thanks.

I had mine out at 21, haemorrhaged and was in hospital for a couple of weeks. It was all quite unpleasant. They stopped the bleeding by swabbing the back of my throat with hydrogen peroxide.

I got ice cream at first and then toast!

I felt tired afterwards. I'm still waiting for it to wear off...

It seems that everyone that has had some kind of bad infection has felt ill for at least a couple of Months, which is interesting as I felt ill for about 8 weeks after I had this Abcess, I still had some seepage of puss right up to the tonsilectomy, I think it's gone now and am feeling a bit better today.
I suppose time will tell.

Thankyou to all that have posted, it's helped no end :)

Martin,

Perhaps the antiseptic and anesthetic qualities of alcohol may help :D

Had a few bottles of Wine at the weekend, didn't notice a soothing effect, not in my mouth anyway, tried to eat an Orange yesterday, Ouch that hurt

This has been the most upsetting thread I have read for a long time.

I wont tell you about my tonils operations. alright I will tell you.

I was around 7 and I didn't like it so I escaped from the P.O.W hospital Tottenham (put on a dark coloured dressing gown) and was picked up around 2 miles away. Cant remember much else because I think I was a little under the weather.

Martin, I hope you have improved some more, it could have been worse the other end. (you know what I mean the circ. )
