Had a friend round tonight who is doing a barn conversion. He doesn't have a trade but does get stuck in and have a go at the easier stuff. I asked him what he had done today and he told me he had "fixed" his tape measures. I asked what he ment and he explained he was fed up of the hooks on the ends being loose so be had super glued them (on 4 tape measures!) so they couldn't move anymore which would make his measurments more accurate =D>

Daft question, why is the hook loose on tape measures? Genuinely don't know :-(

how thick is the bent over tang on your tape measure? how much does the end float by? does that give you a clue?

edited: that was passive aggressive wasn't it, sorry. basically the end floats by the thickness of the end plate so you can measure in to an wall or hook it over and not lose that 1mm.

it also has a little hook so you can hang it over a nail.

So you can measure internal and external distances, it slides the same as the thickness of the hook.

Mine are usually so caked with mud I have to clean them to make them loose again. :-D

Funnily enough, my father did that once to one of his tape measures(although he soldered it rather than glued it). He was a man who'd served an apprenticeship, held the post of 3rd engineer in the merchant navy during wartime, been maintenance manager at the Park Lane hotel, made his own transistors from point contact diodes, and latterly made his living making built-in furniture and kitchens. I guess sometimes people can miss what seems blindingly obvious to others.

by the time it is measured, cut/etc doubt the 1mm will make any odds to an amateur!

What did he say when you told him what he had done wrong? ... I assume you told him? :)

Yes I did tell him but it took a couple of practical demonstrations for him to grasp it, he did look a bit embarrassed so I said I wouldn't tell anybody
