Thanks Peter
So infection is still an issue with iPads as it is on say a laptops

Think we have to be careful what terms we are using here. To my mind, the chances of getting any malware on any Apple device is minimal. Especially compared to a device running Android or any flavour of Windows.

It's harder to install malware on iOS than it is on Android and Windows so there are more of them about but it's also very very easy to avoid getting a malware on Android so unless you don't trust yourself to exercise safe computing it really isn't an issue. Malware and general dislike of Microsoft is one reason why I have eschewed Windows though.

I bought an Android pad last Christmas, it is just a cheap Arnova model. my main reason for buying it was to show customers photos of my work rather than carry an album around with me. It is fine for this and also comes in handy for getting on the 'net' while I am at work if I need to. I can also take photos with it which I sometimes need to do. Bought it cheap in the HMV closing down sale for £60 including the leather case. :D

I have read through all of the posts, and most of it, is just like a strange alien language, but there is one word in several posts, that is (malware). It may be a stupid question but what is (malware). #-o

Sorry but I am not of the computer generation, which probably indicates I should not be concerned about such talk, but I am always curious. Even if it is to late to learn.

It's never too late to learn and you are probably about same age as me - the generation that invented the home computer!

The kid these days don't know as much as you might think about computers, they are largely button pushers. :)

It's not just those in computer shops who, after seeing grey hair, assume that you know nothing about computers. Pity the financial call-centre agent who on seeing SWMBO's DOB assumes that she is geriatric......oh, SWMBO is very polite but with her razor sharp brain and more degrees under her belt (including a Masters in Psychology) than I have routers, let's just say that she has a way with words. Have you heard a call-centre agent squirm ? I have

Chris, please don't take this the wrong way but if you are using a PC rather than a Mac I sincerely hope that you are running some good anti-virus software on your machine. And that it is up-to-date.

So true :D I've now rebuilt a neighbour's grandchild's laptop 4 times (mainly due to the fact it runs Vista!)

"Do you have any backups?"

Answer "No - how do I do that?"

Eventually had to purchase a copy of Vista for it - it was so badly corrupted

Last time - "Have you got copies of these 3500+ photos that are on here?"

"No - the DVD is read only"

"Ever heard of a USB key?

Dave...there rarely is a 'best' time to buy them. Apple have a very close control on stock release. Never any concept of a January sale for example if that was what you were hoping for. Nor will you find many dealers giving much in the way of discount. The odd £20 here, the odd £30 there. You might want to keep an eye open on the Apple Refurb store....http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/specialdeals/mac

For example, at the moment, you can get up to £140 off an iPad.

Just ordered two Refurbished iPad with Retina display Wi-Fi + Cellular 64GB - White (4th generation)

Thanks for the link Roger and for all the help you have all offered

Much appreciated

Well they are personnel things especially if you access your mail, calendars etc etc. using them?

We've now got one each but bought them in the States where they work out a bit cheaper.

We have always had separate laptops as we use them for different things makes life easier. I now have to figure out I get my wireless Garmin forerunner up and running on the iPad when it arrives (it uses a ANT in my usb port to download my stats into the laptop).
We will see

I've had a Blackberry 7" 64gb for some while but have vaguely been thinking of getting something bigger and quicker. Had a try of my son's iPad, it's nice and and it is bigger but no quicker, so I'll have to do a bit more research. Trouble is there are so many on the market and I guess after Christmas the prices will tumble (except Apple of course :) ).

I'm curious to know what aspect is 'slow'. Downloading? Scrolling?

Roger that’s fine, thanks for thinking about it.

I have a Norton package, for which I pay them a princely sum each year, is it good ,is it up to date, I have no idea, and would not know how to check, just have to trust/rely on them.

I don’t do banking or anything like that, would not know how to, plus I would be to scared. 8-[

I don’t down load anything, or not that I know of.

To me the computer is a very menacing piece of kit that sits on the desk, just waiting for an opportunity, to make me apply a string of bad/disgusting verbal abuse at it.

Computers are the invention of the devil himself.
Computer printers were invented by either his wife or daughter, has to be a female invention, because they never do what you want or expect.

Take care.

I didn't say it was "slow" it was just no quicker around the web or running apps than my older Blackberry - but then it's not the latest iPad either.
