If there is Virgin Olive Oil and there is also a common-or-garden cooking variety, what is the purpose of virgin olive oil? :lol: :lol:

I know what you mean of course, but the way you expressed it, seemed funny in a subtle kind of way!

Virgin oil denotes the first pressing of the olives, and is prised in those countries where it is native. All other apart from virgin are secondary or further pressings.
Re the original post, I forgot to mention that WD40 sprayed on to any surface, will eventually dry and is difficult to rub off, the process is accelerated in hot dry sunshine conditions, don't know if this through UV reaction or simply heat. Recently iv'e spayed a large engineers vice in this way and put it in the greenhouse (1 week) fully dry and protected, I'll monitor this for longevity and let you know later how well it lasts...bosshogg :)

AIUI a lot of olive oil is now extracted by centrifugation rather than pressing so I wonder what really constitutes virgin olive oil now.

Seriously though, I reckon damp is worst in the autumn, not the winter. Reason: warm air holds more moisture, and it's cooling in the autumn/early winter and dumping the moisture on any cold surface. Later in the winter the air becomes very dry. In spring/summer the moisture in the air increases, but because the temperature also rises, the RH doesn't increase much at the same time.

Thus I put the most effort into keeping rust at bay in the autumn/early winter, and until recently have brought planes, sash clamps etc. into the house. We've re-roofed/insulated the worksh-er-garage, so I'm hoping it won't be quite as bad in the future.
 
My pharmacist sells small medicinal bottles of olive oil. (Approx 1 gill. 1/8th of a pint I think. It is useful for removing earwax.
Being a woodworker, I'd rather cook with the oil though! :mrgreen:

I came across a chrome-plated No. 4 once. The owner wanted me to fettle it and get rid of the chrome! That was one helluva job, but I was determined not to give in, and take it to a plating firm to have it stripped. 8)

There are actually various grades of "Virgin" olive oil but the very best...which I consider comes from a small village near Pula in Croatia...from a woman in that village (not just anyone!) who keeps it in her cellar and only sells it to you if you come with a Croatian...is for eating...and if it opens in your suitcase you need to throw all your clothes away....and the suitcase. :oops:

Olive oil is usually mixed with rapeseed or sunflower oil and is sold accordingly...for cooking and oiling yer Raleigh. :mrgreen:

I am assured that there are similar grades of Camelia oil...and the very best comes from Japan and is extracted by Geisha only on a full moon and when there is no snow on Fuji. :wink:

Only that grade of Camelia oil works on tools...otherwise you should use 3in1 oil...but be warned...don't blame me if yer bike starts to squeek from neglect! :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen:
