The old Highway Code's lost in the mists of time.............

I cross a stagerred crossroads every morning but am unsure of the signalling protocol..... Do I (red car) to go straight across:

A) Signal right, pull out then signal immediate left ? or

B) Don't signal at all, pull out, then signal left ?

Hope I've explained it OK  At the moment, it's shut your eyes and hope for the best !!

Personally, I would indicate right, then immediately left. Simply because that is what you are doing - turning right then left. I don't know what the official protocol is though.

You should signal right as you approach the junction and only signal left if it would benefit other road users in my opinion

Surely, unless it is 3am and the road is completely empty, it is impossible to make a decision on whether indicating would benefit other road users. It is always safer and more courtious to let other people know what you are doing.

People not indicating is probably my main gripe about driving. Especially when exiting a roundabout.

Go read the Highway code

'A'

but as has been mentioned - no point indicating if no one is around to see ! (learned on my advanced motor bike training)

Same here

Best not mention "The System" or Roadcraft though cus we might be here for a long time

I do A when it's busy and sorry, but don't indicate at all when no vehicles around! Mrs Wood has just told me (and explained  ) why you should go for the A option!

Why the embarrassed emotion

no point in indicating if it does not benefit other road users ie. a clear road( this includes cyclists, pedestrians, horse riders and of course Tusses and me on our motor bikes)

But I would advise indicating right as you approach the junction too many unknowns unless you have perfectly clear view of all on coming traffic and then decide if the signal left is necessary thus avoiding signal clutter

I would always indicate right and pull up at the junction with car angled to the right with wheels turned right. This is for three reasons:-
1 - when moving off the wheels are already pointing in the right direction.
2 - vehicles approaching from the right can see the indicator and the angle of the car.
3 - vehicles approaching from the left can see the angle of the car pointing away from them.

From a practical point of view indicating left is unnecessary, and it keeps both hands on the wheel.

We have one of these at the end of the road.
Generally i dont indicate going straight over as i believe it shows the people on the other side with the same intentions as me what im doing, Ive seen people indicate right before and come straight over, Ive seen people indicate right then left, But at a busy junction If theyre indicating right it looks like they will be turning right and crossing your path, When you give way to them and they go straight over and you miss a good pulling out point its quite annoying.

What gets me gong is when people turn right and dont indicate, And yeah, Roundabouts, I always indicate when exitin.

Those of us who inhabit this forum and ride a motor bike will know that a biker's biggest hazard is car drivers.
If you survive the early events you learn not to pay too much attention to signals, where possible you look at the driver and you look at where the car's wheels are facing before you do anything!
I'll bet that comment arouses some memories amongst the bikers on here!

There is a simple solution to this problem which I'm surprsised you have all overlooked...

Simply buy a BMW then you don't have to indicate at all - ever

Yes, but even after all that, the woman in the 5 series BMW still pulls out and hits you - DAMHIK

Oh, and Sawdust - my bike is a BMW - and I do indicate! However, I appreciate the joke.

Usually followed by that immortal line, 'sorry! I didn't see you!'
I wonder how many of us have heard that one?

I thought that but was surprised to learn that in over 60% of accidents it was rider error!!!

The figures I've seen over the years sometimes lumps all vistits to A&E or fatalities together but sometimes breaks them down.
When broken down running off the road on bends seems to be the most common cause of visits but fatalities seem mostly to be caused by cars pulling out in front of the biker, as per the ad on TV.

For myself Andy I have to say that I'm much more alert on a bike than in a car, maybe it's the same for others as well.
