Hi I have a fairly cheap scrollsaw - a proxon, that is really noisy!
I can't afford a cheaper quieter one. Can anyone think of any ideas to soundproof the room? -Worried about annoying the neighbours! Got ear defenders for myself.
Thanks

Why is it noisy? It shouldn't be in normal operation. Certainly not to the extent that you need ear protection. Check the saw itself is not vibrating against your table top, and check your table is not vibrating. Easiest way is to set the saw going then lift it up off the table - is it still noisy? If it is then something is vibrating in the saw itself. If its not then you need to either bolt your saw to a base (table, bit of MDF or thick ply etc) and then bolt or clamp that to a table. You could also try adding weight to the table your saw is on - paving slab, 25kg bag of sand etc. This will also dampen vibration.

If its the saw itself that is noisy, then you need to try and identify what is vibrating (saw table, arm knocking on something etc) and then try and rectify that.

Yes I think you are right. It shouldn't be making that noise - even if it is cheap! It's coming from the machine. Maybe I will ring proxon and show them how loud it is!

It may seem counter-intuitive, but using an underlay (even an anti-vibration mat) would exacerbate the problem. The saw needs to have mass added to it in the ways that other people have suggested, such as bolting it to a heavy-duty bench or building a sand-box.
