Been pottering in the workshop making an inclined shooting board the type that Derek in Oz has been making. I'm quite pleased with the result although I did have a slight problem originally getting everything square, that was down to my method of construction.

Waka,

That looks good, what wood did you use for the runway?

Does your one work? As with out shavings you do run the risk of being labelled a c*ll%ct#r.

I used Indonesian Rosewood for the runway the fence and the fillets for the angle.

I wasn't aware that I had to use it, anyway here is a pic of taking the first cuts.

Surprisingly this came out perfectly square, even I was imprressed.

And another of squaring my first board.

Real wood! it looks stunning but are you sure it wont warp and throw everything out of true? Mine is an offcut of melamine or contiboard

The wood has been in the workshop for ages so any movement should be minimal, also the fence is adjustable, and after all that if it moves enough that it can't be used then its down to plan B.

Brilliant job Waka. Looks too good to be lying in the workshop.
I like the plane too - I haven't seen one like that before. What is is called and where did you get it?

The plane is an Lie Neilson No 9 specifically made for shooting, you should be able to get one through Classic Hand Tools.

"Posh", I'd have it on my coffee table, it's
too good to use. :D
I too wonder about the medallion Waka,
do tell please.

Looks very nice Waka

I am considering replacing my simple bench hook type shooting board at some point and am interested to know if you perceive enough benefit from the ramped arrangement to make it worthwhile.

I know there has been extensive discussion on the theory of this in previous threads, if I recall correctly the main benefit is that it enables a larger section of the blade to be used. Aside from the theory I wondered if it feels better in use?

Cheers, Ed

can't really answer your question because I've only just finished making it, therefore the only use its had is trimming the runway and one practice shoot to check for accuracy.

It certainly feels comfortable to use and i agree that it does use more of the blade giving a skew action. I guess time will tell.

I know Derek is in favour of this method, so he should be able to answer any queries you have.

I think that the main benefit of "ramping" the board is that it effectively puts the plane iron at a skew with the workpiece. We all know that skewing a plane or any blade for that matter makes the job easier.

Richard

Sorry about that last one - I hadn't seen the previous two when I wrote it.
Even after reading the thread referred to I'm still not totally convinced that the ramp doesn't produce a skew effect though.
