I have 1/4 1/2 and 1" in-cannel gouges which need sharpening from new. I have honed and polished the backs and now need to grind/hone the inside bevel.

On the 1" I have ground it parallel to the edge with a tapered stone in the electric drill and this worked surprisingly well. I am familiar with tapered gouge stones but these would not work on the small sizes AFAIAA.

What is the best method?

Slipstones and a bit of manual labour are the answers. They come in all sizes and degrees of fineness and if need be, you can reshape them on the grindstone. For a fine honing/polishing/stropping you can glue some thin leather around suitably shaped sticks and use some polishing compound.

I use a Proxxon mini drill with suitable small grinding wheels to hone mine with the final polish achieved with a felt wheel and honing compound - Rob
