If forum members are happy, I’ll go ahead and have a stab at organising this event, but please shout if anyone is desperately unhappy with these proposals…and that’s all they are at the moment.

As Noel indicated in the previous thread, the Axminster sponsored weekend at Rycotewood on the weekend of the 13-14th Feb will not be an official UKWorkshop event, rather a collection of forum members enjoying a day or weekend at the college, so it should be viewed as a sort of ‘bash’

I haven’t yet contacted Ian Styles to confirm the offer of the bench space as the critical thing is to find bodies for the weekend.

My initial thoughts are that there need to be a min of two members manning the bench at any one time, more would be good, but not too many or it may start to become cluttered (if that’s the right terminology for too many woody nutters…maybe a ‘cluttering’) so my initial feeling is that we’re looking for 6 to 8 members for each of the days, three or four in the morning and a change round in the afternoon. This would then enable those in the ‘team’ not at the bench to go off and have a wander round the other attractions, in much the same way that you would do say, at West Dean.

What could happen at the bench during the course of the weekend? The answer to that is pretty much anything. For example I’d bring along a few demos…possibly a bit of joint cutting, planing techniques, ‘shutes, veneer work, honing regimes (if you could stand the KIII again) Someone might want to set up a lap-top with the forum on line so that any interested parties could see where we come from. Another idea could be to bring a square camping table (I have one) that could be covered with a cloth for a small show of forum member’s work.

If MikeG was on the stand he could demonstrate his turning skills or show us his collection of handplanes 8-[ …

There’s possibly some mileage in Olly’s suggestion:

I think it would be good if we could get someone (maybe more than one person?) to actually make something on this stand. How often do you get that at these shows? Usually, there are plenty of people showing off their tools but, you never see anyone actually making a piece of furniture.

If you really wanted, you could even set yourself a challenge of completing this within a time frame (the duration of the show or, if you're feeling really lucky, maybe even a single day
!”

All other suggestions of activities would be welcome...remember, these are rough proposals at the moment.

The main thing though is to keep the event as fluid and flexible as possible, but at the same time making it enjoyable for all the members taking part.

The first thing then, is to compile a list of those members willing to participate for the day, or even part of a day. Please don’t feel that you may not have sufficient skills to be behind the bench…if you’re part of the UKWorkshop community and want to get involved, then come along. As I’m coming from Salisbury, I’d be happy to be there all day on Sat.
Anyone else interested?...if we can’t get the quorum, then I’ll have to let Ian know that it’s a non-starter, but hopefully that won’t be the case - Rob

I would be happy to do half a day- either Saturday or Sunday, I don’t feel terribly confident at doing a practical demonstration although I am quite happy at nattering about wood (or Photography!!) -my principal reason to visit is to learn more about working with wood. I could bring a small example of something I have made or a Laptop if required.

Mike

Sorry, got the dates wrong, just seen the Axminster announcement,(http://www.axminster.co.uk/article-Axmi ... s-news.htm) I can still do both days FRIDAY or SATURDAY- i'll take the friday off from work if I need to!

Mike

I am planning to come to the event anyway so would be happy to fit into "the plan" whatever day/ times suits.

Not sure what use I'd be, other than getting in the way

I think the suggestion about having a project on the go is a good un, but guess thats up for discussion nearer the time.

Mike and Jim - welcome  ...3 - Rob

I'd love to come along, but I'm firmly in Mikes school of being "not confident" mainly because I'm "not that much cop" (yet - hopefully). However, I've got a BA in making and fetching brews and am currently working toward a Masters in sweeping up. If you can make use of either of these skills then I'll gladly pitch up, can't confirm a day till I'm next in work (Friday).

Cheers

Vinny, no excuses, you're in  Besides you own one of Waka's planes now, so that's a double whammy!...4 - Rob

There just wouldn't be enough hours in the day....!

Mike

PS If this event were closer to home I'd be happy to join in.

Put me down as a yes. Like others I am underqualified to give 'advice', but more than happy to show up, discuss how I do things and generally take part. Even just for the trip to see how the gentry live in 'The Saaarf' ;).

Can make/bring a couple of bits along too, and plenty of tool **** I could share.

I was thinking of knocking up another one of the pirates chests that I made, for my nephew. I could perhaps get all the parts dimensioned in readiness and being them down leaving the dovetails, glue up etc to be done on site? Just a suggestion...

On the point of making stuff etc, what's the situation regarding power tools etc? Cutting dovetails on a jig for example would need a router. I guess you would need to understand the insurance situation from Axminister beforehand...Or do we go hand tools only?

Saturday would be best for me.

Cheers

Mark

I've just seen the dates here for 12th (Friday) and 13th (Sat) not, as I initially thought, Sat and Sunday
Attention to detail...I will still be there though, all day on Saturday - Rob

Mark - sounds good, bring it to the party...please note the days and dates though. Regarding power tools, I'm not sure entirely what situation would be, so to be on the safe side, I'd advise the galootish option would be best...5

Edit - hold fire on that one, I'll check with Ian to see what the situation is - Rob

I was going to suggest getting someone there with a scrollsaw but if power tools are out.....

Collective name for a group of wood nuts - how about a 'knot' or a 'baulk'?

Steve

Not a prayer of getting to this, but would like to register the fact that I would have if I could have.

And someone who's going? Take a honing guide that isn't the KIII, for pity's sakes.

Be great if you could make it though Alf, but I appreciate it's a long trek from the wildernest west of the Tamar to more civilized and refined parts  ...any chance of staying with anybody closer?
Kells are kool 8) ...and shiny :D - Rob

I can bring the Eclipse, for those normal ones among us ;)

I do want to see the Kell though...

I'm up for it Rob, put my name down for the Saturday (AM or PM is fine by me)

I'll have to travel up Friday night though, so can anybody advise any (cheap) hotels/B+B in the area.

I've never been to a "bash" but this one seems too good to miss, I can't wait to meet up with all of you guys.

Cheers

hi rob,
would it be alright if i put my name down provisionally ,after 40years or so with playing with wood professionally i might have enough experience to lend a hand.

(richard) aka.

woodbutcher.

I'd love to say yes but I wouldn't know if I'd be able to make it until at the earliest the week before. Me having next to no knowledge could be useful as I know many of the crazy obvious starter questions people ask - cos I'm still asking them. Failing that I've a doctrate in coffee making.
Bringing a laptop along would be no problem.

Rob I'd also like to say that if it was closer or my weekends were free-er then I'd happily come along, so sadly I can't. However, would be interested in any future events like this
