If forum members are happy, I’ll go ahead and have a stab at organising this event, but please shout if anyone is desperately unhappy with these proposals…and that’s all they are at the moment.
As Noel indicated in the previous thread, the Axminster sponsored weekend at Rycotewood on the weekend of the 13-14th Feb will not be an official UKWorkshop event, rather a collection of forum members enjoying a day or weekend at the college, so it should be viewed as a sort of ‘bash’
I haven’t yet contacted Ian Styles to confirm the offer of the bench space as the critical thing is to find bodies for the weekend.
My initial thoughts are that there need to be a min of two members manning the bench at any one time, more would be good, but not too many or it may start to become cluttered (if that’s the right terminology for too many woody nutters…maybe a ‘cluttering’) so my initial feeling is that we’re looking for 6 to 8 members for each of the days, three or four in the morning and a change round in the afternoon. This would then enable those in the ‘team’ not at the bench to go off and have a wander round the other attractions, in much the same way that you would do say, at West Dean.
What could happen at the bench during the course of the weekend? The answer to that is pretty much anything. For example I’d bring along a few demos…possibly a bit of joint cutting, planing techniques, ‘shutes, veneer work, honing regimes (if you could stand the KIII again) Someone might want to set up a lap-top with the forum on line so that any interested parties could see where we come from. Another idea could be to bring a square camping table (I have one) that could be covered with a cloth for a small show of forum member’s work.
If MikeG was on the stand he could demonstrate his turning skills or show us his collection of handplanes 8-[ …
There’s possibly some mileage in Olly’s suggestion:
“I think it would be good if we could get someone (maybe more than one person?) to actually make something on this stand. How often do you get that at these shows? Usually, there are plenty of people showing off their tools but, you never see anyone actually making a piece of furniture.
If you really wanted, you could even set yourself a challenge of completing this within a time frame (the duration of the show or, if you're feeling really lucky, maybe even a single day!”
All other suggestions of activities would be welcome...remember, these are rough proposals at the moment.
The main thing though is to keep the event as fluid and flexible as possible, but at the same time making it enjoyable for all the members taking part.
The first thing then, is to compile a list of those members willing to participate for the day, or even part of a day. Please don’t feel that you may not have sufficient skills to be behind the bench…if you’re part of the UKWorkshop community and want to get involved, then come along. As I’m coming from Salisbury, I’d be happy to be there all day on Sat.
Anyone else interested?...if we can’t get the quorum, then I’ll have to let Ian know that it’s a non-starter, but hopefully that won’t be the case - Rob
