Miles away - totally impractical...
Albeit only recent use, I'm finding this remote desktop software quite good (in so far as it seems to just do what it says on the tin): http://www.teamviewer.com/index.aspx

Most other remote desktop applications I've tried to use (including MS Remote Desktop) require a lot of setup at the "other end" - so much so that you need remote access to do the setup!!!

(For me this is a bit of an own goal... I'm now even more committed to supporting family and friends with their computer woes!) hey ho.

I use VNC on the internal network. Never used it over the net tho.

VNC is murder over the web, one of our clients insisted we use it. Turned out they couldn't figure out how to set up remote desktop so we did it for them.

I would certainly recommend Teamviewer as well. I use it both to access my personal laptop from work, and to support my mother-in-law when she has computer problems.

I use teamviewer a lot - sorts the rents out and also inlaws meaning not having to go over there a lot ;)

Lot faster than the windows own and as free for non commercial is a great tool - can keep a list of id's also so that if you have to log into the same machines time after time you dont keep asking for their pc id's :)
