I'm in the process of renovating an old Record No.5. It's in good condition, but the finish on the handles has crazed and chipped badly, the wood beneath is sound though.

My question is, I have removed the crazed varnish but left a portion around the Record sticker which is virtually complete; what can I use to stabilise the varnish where the sticker is before I refinish the handle?

It looks like the label is applied over the varnish, similar to a water transfer.

Cheers.

Unfortunately due to the possibility of trade mark & copyright infringement we cannot allow this on a open forum, so we have had to remove the offending text.

Hopefully, if you're successful Dan(germouse), you might make them more widely available, in return for cash or barter of course.

David Lynch, in his website http://www.recordhandplanes.com shows 3 variations. Which are you reproducing?

Cheers, Vann.
hi Vann
Will be trying type 1 to start with. Will post in the forum how it goes. Just hope its a success.

In the interest of keeping old tools as honest as possible, I'd be hesitant in terms of reproducing and adding transfers/waterslide decal. If an existing decal is present it's fair to conserve/restore it, but heading down the repalcement decal route could potentially give a false impression regarding condition if re-selling.

It is possible to restore around and stabilise the finish beneath old waterslide decal via ye olde worlde superglue route if you wish to.

first I don't restore planes to resell, second i'd never restore a plane that was in a nice original condition. but if you get a cheap plane at a boot sale that is sound but tatty / rusty I don't see anything wrong with restoring it to as nice and as near original a condition as you can.

A lot of my posts concerning makeing new decals have been removed by the mod's so I decided to contact Irwin - Record to see if they had any problems with me reproducing Record decals, below is my emails and their replies. I hope this will be taken note of by the mods and they can see the company is fine with it and indeed are very happy with what i'm trying to do.

Hello Mr Penfold

It is fine in covering your costs.

Good luck.

Hello

Many thanks for the quick reply. One more question, would it be ok to have my fellow enthusiasts pay for the decals just to cover the cost of makeing them. Please be assured that we are only restoring Record planes from before the 1960's and these are for our own use not for resale.

Many thanks for you kind help

Regards

George Penfold.

Good Morning Mr Penfold,

Thank you for your email. There is no problem with you making waterslide decals for your planes and those of friends.

The only issue that would arise would be if you were to try to market copies of the planes.

I wish you well in your task.

Kind Regards

Hi DM,

If it floats your boat do it, but new decals will still flake, split and wear off if applied to user tools. That's how the originals wear away and whether they're present or not makes not a ha'peth of difference to useability. I don't have a problem with that and it's your's and other's choice to make. However, the downside to this is the fact that unscrupulous individuals will be more than willing to pick up on this idea (They already do elsewhere), scan and produce facsimile decals, apply them to re-conditioned Heinz 57 tools with mis-matched parts and attempt to sell them as collection pieces (EvilBay). In effect, potentially de-frauding honest users/collectors out of hard earned funds whilst lining their own pockets with the proceeds.

Barring original packaging, intact labels can and do improve old/antique tool re-sale value.

Irwin Record suggest the same in one of the replies you've posted where they mention the sale of copies, whilst confirming their views concerning your own intentions in a positive manner.

I've re-conditioned my own harem of handplanes (Primarily Record) as a matter of course during their lifespan and without any intention of re-selling, but their decals have mostly disappeared over the span of time and I don't feel a need to re-apply decals. To each their own. :) My hand planes will eventually hit the second hand market once I'm gone and yours will too.

They were refering to making a complete copy of one of their planes and selling it as a Record.

I must've omitted the phrase "sale of copies" from my statement. Nah, there it is. lol
