I'm after a 1000 wide range cooker for my nearly finished kitchen but have no idea of which one to go for. They seem to start from £1000 up to around £5000. The cheapest one we have found is the Stoves Sterling (£1400 ish) and the others we have looked at are the Britannia, Falcon and Lacanche ones which are considerably more expensive (even secondhand) Can anyone give me the benefit of their experience on this matter regarding the more expensive cookers on the market and are they worth the money. (anyone selling one, please let me know)

Have a look in this thread...

Personally I'd love a Lacanche.
That was my thread and it looks like I never updated it. We went with a Viking in the end. We got the showroom display model for £3.5k with LPG conv.

Massively impressed with it. The burners could do with being able to go a little bit lower in the heat range, even lowest setting is quite aggressive, but the hotplate and grill are fantastic. The burner collars come out and go in the dishwasher so cleaning is a doddle.

The best bit of all, because of the configuration of our kitchen we can't seal it off to stop baby getting in. Even with both ovens on at top temp there isn't a single part of the whole exterior that gets above mildly warm to the touch. While we don't use this as a safety measure in itself, it does give peace of mind that if she escapes for a second and plants both hands on the glass of the doors (as she likes to look in them) then she will be safe.

Ours is the VGSC548-4GQ with the 4 burners, grill and hotplate.

I probably buy about 10-15 ranges a year as part of my business.
Stoves are not great, very tinny and rattly. Don't rate rangemaster either.
Its the same old story you get what you pay for.
I would say the best quality ranges start with Brittannia and go upwards in price, Viking, falcon, wolf, Lacanche.

Don't people find ranges a pain in the rs? Lots of fiddly bits to clean and ovens down near the floor. We considered a range but, for the above reasons (and not finding one we liked the look of either), went for an induction hob and high-level double oven in the end. No regrets - takes 20 seconds to clean the hob and excellent speed (faster than gas) and control of the heat too.

I agree that a eye level built in oven would be the one I would choose if I had a choice but I've designed and made my kitchen(my first ever woodworking project) around some free granite worktops a friend was throwing out. We're only intending stopping at this present house for the next two years so the design isn't my dream one but a developers!! one. I might have a look at some second hand expensive makes instead of a new cheaper make as we'll be leaving the cooker with the house so wouldn't want to spend 4 to 5 grand on one.

Well, my wife and I spent a couple of days emailing and visiting local kitchen showrooms, basically, just being "cheeky" and asking if they had any ex-display range cookers they wanted rid of. You never know, if they want to put a new display in, they might want to open up some space. We now have a ex-display Falcon, never been used, bl**dy heavy, slightly dusty in the back of my van.

Our Britannia works a treat! The ovens do what it say on the tin it terms of temperature. Britannia installation service is rubbish, but it is well made and we should not need them again.

But if you can buy a Lacanche do not hesitate.
