farther christmas came this year and gave me a LN No.5( by means of my wife, using my credit card :wink: ). so its time to take this bad boy for a spin..... OK, board of planing scrapes of pine. So i've found my nearest hardwood dealer. asked for price on a 1" x 8" x 8' of white oak. their answer was £21.50 :? . i think this works out about £48 (ish) a cu ft. now i think this is over priced, but i do not know by how much. i would love to hear any advice on what price to expect

Is there anywhere other dealers anyone can recommend in the chester\Liverpool\Cheshire area, also is there anyway you can easier get rough price to expect

i don't expect to get the cheapest price, and i am a local business and like to support local trade, but just want a fair price for a good product

Down here in darkest essex I'm paying locally about £25 incl vat for american white oak sawn (one straight edge)sized same as yours, so your quote sounds about right, regards, Catface.

assuming you are enquiring about rough sawn,

8"x1" x96" = 0.44 cubic feet
American white oak on average , £27 per cubic foot
So if you guys are paying around £25 or so for less than half a cubic foot you are being ripped off :shock:
I wouldnt want to be paying any more than £12- £15.

The last batch of AWO I bought was £32.00 a cubic foot including delivery.

To get free delivery the order had to exceed £250.00.

So the bottom line is, I think you are paying over the top.

You have probably been charged the 'Wally Rate'.

This is the list price that timber merchents give out to new enquiries to dissuade annoying DIYers and woodworking hobbyists from wasting their time! :lol:

For what it's worth, AWO runs at around £25-£30 per cubic foot. Your piece should have cost you between £10 and £13.

You will normally need to buy a dozen or so boards to get this price, however.

Try Irmass Ltd in Trafford Park, Manchester.

thanks dan next time I'm ask for the "none wally rate", i am in a similar trade so will be setting up account and don't mind asking for proper rate now that i have a bit of knowledge :wink: . i think buying at a wally rate is not as bad as asking for wally price.

I bought a pallet of oak just like this and it was a very good buy. It will last me for ages and for small projects is very useable. Works out at about £8 per cube I think.

That's great find, Tony!

In furniture making, I seldom use anything longer than about 4', so buying wood in this way would suit me down to the ground (and save a fortune!).

As I'm out of action this week, I think I'll take a trip down to see them!

I needed a piece of Oak in a hurry today, so I went to my local yard for 11' of 2 x 8.....

They wanted £111.00 plus vat, work out about £91 cu ft +vat Ouch!!!

I quite often get people coming in the workshop wanting to buy pieces of hardwood for projects at home. It seems that the few timber yards around who deal in hardwoods delight in making it both difficult and very expensive for occasional users to buy off them.

I normally charge three times what it costs me and bung it through the thicknesser a couple of times free of charge. Cash only, of course!

People still seem to think I'm cheap!
