Your hands? You know you're supposed to use a gouge right?Frustrated just tried to turn some spelled wood... rotted all the way to centre
Hands now too painful to do any more for a few day at least
Should have read gouliesYour wee little goolies remind of the characters that chased pac man in the arcade game excellent Halloween idea
Some woods just don't like being hollowed, just have to sharpen more often. How not to start a day
Decided to start to turn the wood recovered from the sea
1. Two attempts to fit a face plate, had to drill pilot holes
2 did not notice that the last 10 mm of the bit had broken off in the wood, it came back to bite me and my tools
3 the wood is so hard, harder than the old oak.. after 2 and a bit hours I had the motive cut and the o/s of the bowl shaped. So far so good. Started to hollow out....... an hour and half....I have remove 15mm on a 125 mm hollow
At this rate it will be finished sometime 2029...lol
I know I have been spoilt turning soft wood
Don't put yourself down, that's cool. How about test yourself and have some fun by joining in with secret santa?I have really enjoyed going through this thread. I’m sitting here slack jawed at the the high standards of the work. I’m almost embarrassed to offer you these birds.

What is impressive is my daughter’s artwork. We have pecking woodpeckers, parrots, kingfishers and even pigeons.
Cut in half through the centre judging by the tape measure in the photo cut to 10cm along the length on both pieces to give yourself two square bits then turn you should end up with a lovely set and if you have enough left over reapeat good luck look fwd to the photos patA pre round section of sea kill
As Pat says, I'd split in half and make a matching set of 4 small bowls, alternatively turn them both as spindles and make 2 matching vases, no need to hollow out if you can drill the hole to around 20mm.A pre round section of sea kill
Not a big fan of blue but that really does go well with the spalted woodNot the most recent thing but rather my first and so far only foray into epoxy resin.

It started when I spotted some spalting in a piece of firewood at my parent’s place. It was a branch join I think and was fatter on that side than the other.
I found turning epoxy somewhat fraught. I still find the odd piece of shrapnel in the recesses of the garage!

It now has pride of place at mum and dad’s place.

Any thoughts on what it isAs Pat says, I'd split in half and make a matching set of 4 small bowls, alternatively turn them both as spindles and make 2 matching vases, no need to hollow out if you can drill the hole to around 20mm.
Looking at the bark I'm not sure it's Birch though.
