The cherry burl saga
Just a small offering today last of the two small bits. the top part I've used to make the second lid for the stumpy pot.so what was left over was pretty small. Then an idea occured to me that would incorporate the small plate. Heres what I've come up withand with the plateI have not glued it yet but this is were I'd appreciate you input. I've got ca glue epoxy glue the small two pack syringe type and titebond 3 waterproof wood glue. Of these three witch would be the best to use bearing in mind its for food use (egg cup) or should I be using something else. Thanks in advance

Road kill
I picked up a chunk of silver Burch that was in the middle of the road, did a rough turn to remove the bark and knots
After that I coated it with pva on the o/s edge then left it to dry.
Today I cut it in half and made these, some nice pattens .

Nothing too worrying, wear a mask while sanding and you'll be fine

Over the weekend I watched a YouTube video of a multi offcentre chrimbo tree so thought I'd have a go, fairly happy with the results, one isn't sanded at all and the other just a quick pass with some 240g

Did you use a spinal Chuck /jaws for the trees?
Those bows made from road kill were a step out of my comfort zone. I normally use a face plate to start
These were turned using button/Cole jaws and Axminster a plus jaws, (much wider than my normal jaws)
Turn one bit reverse, turn some more and reverse and repeat..... lots of times
The ribs are a last reversed Chuck turn to ease out the bite mark from the hard jaws.

I bought two 6 by 2 inch blanks, then I did something daft
I looked on the web about the risks...... scared my self. I was about to “bin” it and call it a costly lesson learnt
I use a full face dust mask the 1st layer is p2 filter followed by cartridge filter

I just used my 50mm jaws and a live centre, look at Mike Peace Woodturning on YouTube, he shows how to do it a couple of days ago.

The wood database is probably the best online resource for info about woods.
Walnut is a stunning wood, I've only turned a few pieces and they were gorgeous.

Definitely agree with Stigmorgan regarding the wood database easily the best site I've come across for info about wood toxicity and allergies and wood types

Hi all thanks for the info, I have the wood toxic data base, I made the made the mistake of going on line and scared my self lol
Just turning some pine poss yellow pine as it is full of sap. One piece cracked 3/4 way through so that was thrown in the wood burner pile.

Club night last week had some cute mice on the display table along with a carved piece of “Swiss cheese”. As I’m very much at the stage of breaking more than I complete I thought it would be fun to make disaster mice with the remnants…

Decided against copying the idea, I’ve done disaster acorns instead. Just for the practice!

Hedge prunings, no idea what but the paler ones smell fruity.

The cherry burl saga
Second to last piece of the cherry burlthere's a y crack at the bottom middle, one on top, one half way to the right and a inclusion/ hole on the left in the photo, flip the piece over and discovered a crack top to bottom through the good wood part. Thus rendering this piece useless. Out with the chainsaw and processed the last piece and had this left overthen cracked on with turning this 17cm wide by 12 cm high bowl. Had a few holes and cracks that got the coffee and ca treatment and finished with the shellac formula I've been using.the end is in sight just that small off cut of this bowl to do something with and I'll be finished.

I am using old C1960’s 6*2 inch pine chamber joist to turn bowls. Just finished 2 today.

The old wood has come out nice. One last job..... go and fill the nail hole from where the plasterboard was nailed to the joist.

Hi its, rustins sanding sealant and chestnut friction polish both are shellac based if you scroll back to the bottom of page 46 theres a photo so you know what to look out for.

I have the chestnut food safe when funds permit I will have a look. I looked at the True Grit
But it’s not listed as food safe. I have the shellac both pre made and I have bought the flakes .
I made up a small batch, start off it looked like my custard... lumpy
But by morning it was all dissolved.

Short day at the workshop for me got the off cut and processed for turning a small bowl one end had this
And the other end was light soft airy, a bit like pumice stone. Got it to a basic outside shaped and a tendon on the end. Turn my attention to the rottten end pieces soaked as much wood hardener and put epoxy glue into the cracks.
Leaving it to cure till tomorrow afternoon fingers crossed
