Here is my first (successful) natural edge bowl, pretty pleased with it despite a few areas of tear out (which are barely noticeable unlike in the pictures).
I didn't dare going any thinner due to my previous failed attempt.

Lovely grain, not entirely sure of the type of oak; the log came from an evergreen tree, if it helps.

That'll be holm oak. Beautiful, somewhat splitty and very hard.

I like the natural edge bowl, I don’t think my skill in woodturning is that level yet so it will be a while before I try
It's not so different from a flat rimmed bowl unless the live edge is extremely wavey. Feel free to come over for some practice, I've loads of Lime blanks you can practice on 😉

I have a piece ready cut 45mm x 60mm but also have another 15mmx55mm which of you wished you could glue them together for free. Otherwise I would have to cut from a larger piece but would cost £30 + P&P.

I'll pass for now, the glued section would likely come off during use and I don't have funds at the minute, have to find the cash to pay my shop rent for this month. Thank you for looking though I really do appreciate it 😁

Nice piece of wood what are they?
Someone here gave me advice on my out of balance bowl, can’t find the thread now
However, thank you, I did look at the alignment and it’s spot on thank you .
Just had a play with an idea I wanted to try, I wanted two coloured lines on the edge of a bowl

The bowl is brill ice work
Well I am done for a few days, I run most of my tools on solar panels batts and an inverter
The problem this time of year is limited sun light, I am now taking more out of the batts that is getting put in,
I have now reached the point where, there is not enough left in the batts to power the dust vac or the lathe

Rooting around my garden woodside I found 3 big lumps of cherry that I was given almost 3 years ago, they're still very heavy even with quite a bit of soft stuff, I took a piece out to the garage and started removing the bark so I could see how badly the cracks had spread, turns out very badly, all of the white layer has splits everywhere, all in a spiral around the log too so it must have twisted as it grew.

I cut a piece off and split it in half then mounted it between centres, the good bits are rock hard and I managed to get past the cracks and still had enough to make one of the heads for the big plumbers hammer, it still needs sanding and finishing but it's going to look stunning once the friction polish goes on

There's some lovely grain pattern do you think you might get a small lidded bowl out of what's left?

The cherry burl saga
Yesterday was nice and sunny so was preoccupied with an other work request for stephs grandmother repairing and repainting her garage door nearly finished.20241004_174553.jpgSo this morning leaped out of bed this morning so as to finish the odd shaped bowl. Here it is rough shaped sanded and cracks filled with the coffee granules and ca glue method 20241005_135042.jpg20241005_135116.jpg20241005_134937.jpg20241005_134958.jpgand now after the final sanding and finish 20241005_134900.jpg20241005_134619.jpg20241005_134813.jpg20241005_135837.jpg20241005_135623.jpgnow its off to an artisan market somewhere near Ardres with Steps mum and Pierre. For the afternoon.

Once I'd had a rest and a play with the doggos I went out to sand and finish the cherry hammer head I turned yesterday, OMG it's absolutely stunning so I ended up doing the half ball counter weight with the opposite half of log, a tiny crack in it but I don't mind it, the sheen from the friction polish is amazing, it may well be my new favourite finish. Everything is a tight-ish fit so considering using a little 5 minute epoxy to make sure nothing falls apart, the handle could have maybe been a little bigger.

The cherry burl saga
Should have stayed out of the work shop today but couldn't resist.here i the of center handle lid I was developing 20241006_145828.jpgto go for the stumpy pot20240926_212047.jpgbut stopped going any futher than this. Might use it on a different project in the future but to be honest just do not like it. So made this one instead20241006_145937.jpgmuch much nicer me thinks. As for the stumpy pot took the tenon off. Polished it up and here it is20241006_150234.jpg20241006_150207.jpg20241006_150255.jpg20241006_150141.jpg
