Made this last night, sealed with shellac and carnuba wax

First bowl on new Clarke large with new record sc3 chuck! Already love the chuck. Happy with bowl outside better than inside not sure why I can’t get the same smooth finish inside but for first one not gonna beat myself up … any feedback appreciated also big thank you to Mick who spent some time show me stuff this afternoon

Been working on this for a couple of friends who have just finished their first grape harvest will give it to them tonight. The bottle is apple tree,the splash and holding rings are ash and the two leg stands and wine are speckled birch. The board was brought from a resource shop that I had laying about for a while so used that instead of making one as a time saver.

Thank you the splash was a rough turned bowl then I drew the splash silhouette around the sides cut out the main unwanted bits with w scroll saw the finished the rest with knife and dremell. Then hand sanded too 400 grit. Finished with 6 layers of marine varnish and a final coat of melamine lacquer.

Now that turning is very different , Not seen anything like it before , Well thought out and executed , I like this a lot, Well done.

I got my first lathe and started trying turn things about 6 months ago, and this is some of my best work so far. I have tended to try and run before I can walk. Having a fascination for the unusual, I experimented with multi-axis turning before I'd even done my first bowl! The small bowls you see are the only ones I've made, last week actually! You guys told me months ago that I should enroll on a woodturning course, but I couldn't afford it, and just persevered with my carbide tools learning by my mistakes. Had a few catches and a few lumps of wood on ballistic trajectories, especially during the multi-axis stuff, but I'm hopefully learning through the mistakes. No real injuries except when I accidentally dragged my hand across the very sharp 60 degree point of the live centre which I shouldn't have left in the tailstock when not needed - bloody and painful! One day I will learn how to sharpen tools so I can progress from just "scraping" the surface of this wonderful learning curve. Whatever, I'm thoroughly enjoying my new retirement hobby .

My first commission was from my daughter, who is getting married soon. A wedding cake stand and cupcake stand, which has definitely been a labour of love . If anyone wants to commission me for something similar, my starting price will be £1000 . This represents my time and effort involved. Most of you would probably knock this up in an afternoon, but I'm not very quick at this stuff yet.

Have been turning a few bowls from storm felled silver birch from the woodland.

Some lovely figuring in the pieces from near the base of the tree where it flexed in the wind as it grew

Finished in tung oil and will be used for my porridge and dinners !
