A couple of weeks ago a friend asked if I could turn a large Skittle for his wife's birthday, it's to be used as a door stop. I was more than happy to have a go, but soon realised that I didn't have any spare wood to fit the bill. He told me he'd try and get hold of something suitable and we left it at that.
Fast forward to this afternoon, I had the chainsaw out at the bottom of the garden and I decided to cut a piece off an old Oak mantelpiece that I'd been saving to make a large shelf for our kitchen with. I don't think the Mrs will be overly pleased .... but hey ho.
It took me all afternoon to get it made and the handle has ended up being narrower than I'd planned, that's due to me trying to overcome my fear of using the skew chisel. I had a nasty catch as I was almost done with the handle, but not to be put off and not wanting to admit defeat, I had another go ..... and got another catch! Anyway, eventually I got there.

Nice, but not an ideal shape for a door stop - it'll tip over. But if that's what the customer wants...

My thoughts too.
Cut a decent recess in the bottom and glue in a lead puck, that should keep it from falling over too readily. Does look very nice, she should be well chuffed with that.

I did consider that as I have a couple of lead steelweights that I found while out metal detecting, the skittle weights a fraction under 1.5kg as it is currently.

I'm calling this the ugly bug bowl, it was turned recently while still green and left to dry, warp, crack etc. I've applied some mineral oil.
It's an oak crotch which had already cracked before coming into my possession, by the time I'd got rid of the large cracks it had shrunk considerably.

Although she is retired, my wife volunteers as a medic with a charity in Uganda that helps sick children. One of its activities is with children with a variety of disabilities, both physical and mental. She recently asked me if I could turn a rattle that could be used as a stimulant to these children.
The attached are my two efforts so far. My club has taken on this initiative and, hopefully, next time she goes to Uganda, she will be able to take a good number of rattles.

Had a day off work so decided to go out to the makerspace to make room for my new (to me) bandsaw and a compressor I don't really need but Yolo, ended up turning a piece of spalted green Silver Birch and a bone dry piece of Pine, the pine was meant to have a pewter lid set into the opening but I forgot to allow for sanding and the lid fell through into the pot so now it's a bowl.

A pleasing design / Shape , I like it as it is different.
Great job, Steliz. Are these segmented, or is the brick like pattern added after turning?
