I need to have two sets (3+3) of HSS knife blades sharpened recommendations please I live in nantwich cheshire.
Many thanks mail order or deliver by hand are both ok.

Don't know the Nantwich area, but many saw specialists also sharpen planer blades. Down here, it's Bedford Saw Services - they might even do mail order if you can't find anyone nearer?

George,

How about getting a Veritas planer blade honing jig and doing ityourself. Never tried one myself as I don't have a planer but the other kit I have from Lee Valley is first rate.

Seems a very good way to go, the only downside I can see is it only sharpens up to 8" blades, but if you do fancy it Brimarc agents stock it.

Cheers

Thanks for all the replies the wood yard is very good but not for sharpening , they are 250mm 10" so veritas would be tricky and there past just a touch up, KMD are just down the road use them for building all the time but did not know the offered a sharpening service so its them first and keep a note of east midlands, cheers

I use a local shoe repair and key-cutting shop in Taunton. They send blades, saws , shears etc away for sharpening. return in about a week.
Perhaps one local to you would be worth investigating.

Hi there,

I have a Tormek grider and planer-knife jig, which is easy to use. However, I haven't used the jig except to sharpen my guillotine blades.
Problem is, if you do grind your own planer-knives, you will have to ensure that the knives are finished to exact sizes, because variation in weight can lead to imbalance, when the machine is running. Dangerous on a planing machine, given the speeds involved.

I have a spare set of knives, so that I can send mine away for grinding and avoid 'downtime'.

Unfortunatey the people I used are out of business, so I can't help there.
Have you tried searching the ads in woodworking magazines? :p

Happy Chipping

John

Yes we do offer a mail order service.

To sharpen a 'Set of 3 x 10" (For Example) P/Irons' HSS would be just £6 + Postage + VAT.

Hope this helps..

That's cheaper than round here. I used to pay £8 + VAT for two 13 in, till I made my own jig.

Roy.

1 x Pr 13" HSS P/Irons...£5.70 + Vat.

All our P/Irons are sharpened on a magnetic bed knife grinder with coolant.

Once machine sharpened, everything is finished by hand using traditional stones.

We've been sharpening blades since 1953

I take mine to Carbide Services in Old Swan Liverpool.

They charge £8 for a set (3 blades) they do a good job, their phone number is 0151 220 6122
