So in an attempt to 'save face' one little girl is branded as 'ugly' and another as unable to sing.
Well done officialdom, there attempts at face saving are beginning to make them look downright silly!

Roy.

Now that IS the Chinese. Even the newsreaders are pretty looking by choice along with Actresses, and singers. Chinese face is everything but maybe not when there is egg on it. As an aside SWMBO who is Chinese thinks it is all lies by the Western press! There again she dosn't think anoyne was killed in Tiannenmen Square either! Isn't education wonderful?

China has historically seen itself as the 'Middle Kingdom', surrounded by lesser mortals, and has never got over their occupation by Foreign Devils, and the loss of Face still dictates their foreign policy to this day.
Sky posts from China show that they are still Sino centric.
One poster insisted that Tibet is historically theirs 'cos they successfully invaded it many years ago.
China and Russia are the last of the great colonial powers, I hope!

How many times have professional singers been miming on TV when theyre supposed to be singing live, I would imagine the 'Ugly' kid would probably have mimed aswell if she would have done it, Imagine the pressure of singing to over a billion people!.

I hate all the 'WOW' to start with, Then the media nitpicking to make it all doom and gloom like they always do. The opening ceremony was in my opinion Fantastic.

Hi,
I must admit that I always look upon each competitor with some awe. My own chances of performing an athletic feat at the Olympics dribbled away about 40 years ago.

BUT I can only look upon the machinations of the IOC, the Chinese Government and even our British Government with contempt and a wonder at the lack of common sense.

The opening ceremony was in my opinion Fantastic.

Indeed! But as a keen sportsman in my younger days I still subscribe to the motto 'may the best man win!' and it's the competing that's important.
This Olympic games, like many before it, has little to do with sport and everything to do national pride.
The race track has replaced the battle field!
Let the Olympics have a fixed venue, let each nation contribute to its running and upkeep, and let a differnt host nation arrange the games every four years, then once again the games may be about sport!

To my mind the Olympics have everything to do with sport and national pride. The dedication of all the athletes is unquestionable, and they are an inspiration to anyone with the slightest interest in sport. To win an Olympic gold medal is generally looked on as the ultimate in sport. So how anyone can say that they have little to do with sport is beyond me. Regardless of the one upmanship involved in staging them. And I would say that the world would be a far better place if indeed the race track replaced the battlefield in all conflicts.

Sorry to be a killjoy, but 98% of sport leaves me totally uninspired, so haven' seen any of the O so far...however 'Land of the Jaguar' last night  with the guy on that rock face...

The cycling has been excellent, where Nicole Cooke won gold in the women's road race and Emma Pooley won silver in the women's time trial. The track cycling starts tomorrow - should be really good and well worth watching IMHO. If you want to see something really exciting, make sure you watch the madison 8)

Cheers

I think we need to be very careful scoffing at the chinese.

The London olympics is going to be the biggest, most embarrassing, most expensive ****- up this nation has ever witnessed.

I think it would be far better to pass judgement after the LO and not four years before it... - Rob

Maybe Rob, but I know one of the senior men on the construction contract and he is seriously thinking of walking before it destroys his reputation.

The job has to be finished in less than 4 years - some major parts are 18 months behind schedule. Gonna cost lots to catch up.

I predict a fiasco to make the Dome/Wembley/ Scottish Parliament look like slightly off course and a few quid over spent.

Personally I watch it whenever I can, always been keen but mostly on the cycling and athletics - the horse riding and swimmimg I can take or leave. Phelps is certainly an exceptional swimmer, but the greatest Olympian ever? Not to my mind. Bet he will not be doing it in 5 successive games like Redgrave, or be so dominating in more than 1 discipline like Carl Lewis.

Have also been impressed with the archery this year - with the multichannel format of the BBC now we get to see alot more sports than before. Agree Paul that the madison is exciting to watch - but if you haven't seen it before then try and watch it from the start - it isn't half confusing turning on half way through!

Steve.

Having watched that programme last night about how we staged the 1948 Olympics while still recovering from WW2, I reckon we'll manage it OK.

Cheers

What are the 2% of sports that do inspire you.I Find it hard to believe that anyone can only have an interest in 2% of the vast amount of activities that sport covers. I personally have no interest in soccer but do have an interest in other sports.

How about the Millenium Dome or Ken's River of Fire?

I quite like following a bit of F1 occasionally (but that can get boring) as well as the bikers. The TdeF recently was interesting to watch, but almost everything else leaves me stone cold. Running, jumping, bat and ball (one or other in all it's forms) horses, snooker...the very worst is darts  (fat blokes with lots of gold bling) lobbing arrows. Sorry - Rob
