Quite so Dave, and so does mine. Most people with severe hearing problems, like mine have them as a result of age, in my case it was an accident many years ago, and as a friend of mine runs the local re-cycling centre I visit quite often.
But what about my 80 yr old non-driving neighbour, what is she supposed to do?
The packaging states that they must not be disposed of in domestic waste, (otherwise the Council skip diver might end up on his nose at the bottom of the bin checking to see if, God forbid she's not re-cycled correctly).
I will take this opportunity in mid-rant to state categorically that many public servants have treated me not just very well, but with great kindness in fact. Unfortunately their activities are destroyed by too many bloody minded buggers!

Fair point Roy, and I haven't got a clue, I have got a mobililty imparied mum though and I guess this is just another one of those things chalked up to stupidity. Like closing the post office 'cos you can use an ATM to get your pension, except the only ATM that allowed free cash withdrawals close enough to get to was in the post office!

I wish I had a solution (well I do bit I don't want to discuss politics  )

Our lives are dictated by politicians and their policies, I just wish they were for our benefit.

Dave, I'm surprised that you can use the off topic section ,yet not want to discuss politics, everyone of us is governed by politics, every decision we all make is ultimately made because of one political rule or another, our everyday lives and politics are inseperable, we are adults and should be able to discuss differing opinions without falling out or feeling embarrassed for HAVING an opinion, if we don't discuss things in life then we don't progress and things will stay as they are and you will do as you are told, speak up mate, if you have a solution, let's hear it, it can only be better than the present predicament this country is in.

Regards,

Rich.

I've been racking my brains to think of a way I could say what I really think without hijacking this thread and to answer Rich's point.

I'm not afraid of having an opinion, but I am trying to respect what Charley and the Mods are attempting to do here.

I already have a blog, and I've just added an entry that starts to talk about what I believe and what I would like to see. Feel free to comment on the blog, I won't discuss it here.

Dave, at last someone who's read the forum rules. Politics and political issues ought to be a complete non-starter on the OT forum. As some of the mods have said repeatedly...if you want to talk politics, there are plenty of other forums to join. Just my two euros worth - Rob

I agree Rob,I try to steer clear of involving politics as it can and frequently does become so involved and moves away from the original topic.

Having said that most people find it hard not to involve politics in any topic, and this tends to lead other people down the same path.

Politics play a major part in all our lives like it or not. But as you say there are other forums to air your political views.

Last time I posted from the press Rob I was told it was rubbish 'cos it was from the Daily Wail, so this time I posted from that doyen of the hard right??? The Sun, but it is also in the Daily Express.
Another example, today I visited my local hospital for some fresh hearing aid batteries.
'Sorry, can't take the old ones back!'
'Let me guess, Health and Safety?'
'Fraid so.'
So why what was 'safe' last week has, this week, suddenly become a weapon of mass destruction, or is this case of a petty fogging, time serving jobsworth with nothing better to do working out yet another method of making life unnecessarily difficult for the rest of us. Meantime what are people like me supposed to do with the spent batteries?
Politely please!

The Dail Mail, Daily Express, Sun all have one thing in common and that is to sell advertising space, sell newspapers and wind people up and not necessarily in that order. Time and again one or other of them will take a news item and twist it in order to reap the maximum effect. The latest was the Sun banging on about the market traders in Hexham being only allowed to shout on two days a week. Wrong. They can shout every day. It was just one individual (who had been a trader for many, many years) just getting a little too loud. The council had tried a softly softly approach but this was ignored/rebuffed by the individual and so they then had to escalate things a little with the end result we saw in the Sun.

Another example of inaccurate reporting was the booties on police dogs feet when entering mosques....incorrect again but written in such a way as to reinforce peoples bigotry and prejudices. I accept that this may sound a bit hypocritical based on some of my posts in other threads and I 'fess up.

But back to the Olympics....have to say that they do leave me cold but when you see the sheer joy on the faces of those young kids when they won their medals was pretty life-affirming.

I totally agree Roger.
As I have said before, I would check a calender rather than believe the date on some of them.

Ok chaps, buck passing time. Which newspaper can I rely on to be 100 percent accurate at all times on all subjects?

Roy.

Well I would say as it is virtually impossible for anyone to be 100% right all the time, None.

I would argue that the FT is pretty unemotive and factual with very well researched articles from well-respected journalists. Most items that make bold type headlines in the Sun et al usually might get a column inch if they are mentioned at all.

And I would argue that even the most unemotive, factual journalists writing is coloured by their own experience, agenda, cultural grounding and editorial influence. There is no such thing as an unbiased view of any news story, the only way to get a rounded view is to read or view as many reports as you can, and where you can't do that take what you read with a massive dose of salt.

And I would have to agree with Dave, and it is for that that reason that I read five different news papers per week, watch Question Time, Newsnight, BBC, ITN and Sky news to obtain a better balance.
And occasionally I find time for some woodwork as well!

Roy.
