old roughing gouge, any good for beginner?

This is Robert Sorby, I have no idea of age, any good for a beginner? Any reason not good? 5/8"
I'm interested in small stuff only at the moment like handles and knobs.

Yes... a bog standard piece of kit for going from square to round on spindle work, Usually the chunkier the timber the wider the gouge tends to be
 
As Blister says above, NOT for cross grain work. That's why we now emphasize that it is a SPINDLE roughing gouge.
 
To me, it looks as if the handle is not original - too long, and with too much tang protruding. I'd be wary of using it in its present form.
Happy to be put right if I'm wrong!

As with all tanged spindle roughing gouges it is the amount of tool overhanging the tool rest that can cause a problem. Too much & a catch may cause the tang to bend or break.
As long as the tool rest is kept close to the work the problem shouldn't occur.
