This is Robert Sorby, I have no idea of age, any good for a beginner? Any reason not good? 5/8"
I'm interested in small stuff only at the moment like handles and knobs.

Yes... a bog standard piece of kit for going from square to round on spindle work, Usually the chunkier the timber the wider the gouge tends to be
 
To me, it looks as if the handle is not original - too long, and with too much tang protruding. I'd be wary of using it in its present form.
Happy to be put right if I'm wrong!
