Hi all,

I wanted to ask a small favour of someone who has the plans for the New Yankee deluxe router table. I'm considering purchasing the plans, but just wanted to know what size table-top the cabinet is designed for?

I've got the axminster table-top and plate, and wanted to make a Norm style cabinet to fit it on but wanted to see if the sizes were similar so I could follow the plans..

I dont have the plans Byron, but I have the episode recorded if you would like it?

36" x 26" including lippings.

Plans are good, plenty of info and easy to follow. You may want to photocopy various areas of the sheet (it comes as a single, very large, piece of paper) so you can take them into the workshop and not worry about mesing up your original.

See Martin Brown at Brimarc for a copy, he'll sort you out.

It's a good project to make. You might want to alter the height a bit to allow for wheels, esp if you build it to line up with other machines, height-wise.

Cheers
Steve

Hi Byron, I built one of these but without the plans, I used the episode on tape as a guide. Very easy to build and as Steve says alter the height to include wheels if it is to line up with other machines. I have found it invaluble in my shop and have modified it a couple of times now since building it. Good luck.

I've got the plan Byron

one of the kind gentlemen in this wonderful place donated them to me many months ago

I've not yet made the table but I've used the design as a reference to my own plans which are now drawn up so PM me and I'll post them to you

Ian

HI fella's, thanks for the posts - and the headsup regarding the height, it's good that mention it, because it will be inline with some cabinets and my workbench.

Ian - see PM

Hi Byron

Not sure what you need to know exactly, but I made a larger top for my NYW table to accommodate the incra fence. Mine is effectively triangular behind the table and considerably larger than standard

Quick search for the table and tony will turn up photos.

Can measure if you need it

I did exactly that and added 4" overall locking wheels. I must say it's the most moved machine I own :)

The main reason why I was asking is that my axminster table-top is a little bit smaller so I may have to adapt the plans a touch, but shouldn't be a big problem.

Tony, now you've had the incra for a while, what do you think of it?

I have purchased some maple-veneered MDF18mm for this cabinet, will I need any more material, or can it be made from a single sheet?

Doh! Byron I completely forgot to send you that package. Will go first thing tomorrow.

Will MDF be strong enough for this? I was going to use ply :?:

Strength isn't the issue, but rigidity is. Well-made, this will last you the rest of your life. Bite the bullet and buy Birch ply. Yes it's expensive, but not as expensive as building it twice (and the second time you will buy the Birch ply!).

Too late i'm afraid. I've ordered the 18mm Veneer MDF - my supplier couldn't source veneered ply in that thickness. I'll just have to makesure I put in plenty of brackets/cross-pieces too keep it rigid.

But will I need more than 1 sheet for the build?

If I remember correctly Byron it is built from one sheet of 18mm ply but there is a lot of 12mm or 1/2" used as well

The deluxe versions top is two thicknesses one 18mm ply and one 18mm MDF.

You remarked on using brackets, there are none used it's all dadoes and rabbets.

Nibbo - so is it worth my buying a sheet of half-inch ply and use that with the 18mm MDF (my top is already done, i'm just doing the cabinet part). Or should I try and worm my way out of the order and use 18mm ply aswell..

It's my understanding that birch ply comes in 5'x5' sheets as opposed to 8'x4' - if thats correct, will only 1 sheet of that, and 1 sheet of 12mm regular be enough? (I might be able to change my order if it's about the same price, the mDF was about £50!)

I didn't make the NYW table, I went for the plan in the Hylton and Matlack book "Woodworking with the router", because I already had the book. It looks pretty similar to Norm's one though. The main cabinet parts were all cut from one sheet of 18 mm birch ply but I also needed some 6 mm ply for the back and for making up the drawer bottoms and some 12 mm for drawer runners. The construction method is all housings and rebates (dados and rabbets) held together with glue and carcass screws. Not sure I'd be happy with MDF and carcass screws going into "end grain" with something that is subject to high frequency vibration (a router going at 20,000 rpm). I would also recommend birch ply. I used B&Q birch ply which was then about £33/ 8'x4' sheet. It has gone up a bit now but in the scheme of things that is not a lot to pay to get it right first time.

Advice taken. I've managed to cancel my order of the veneered MDF. I've been quoted £45+VAT for a sheet of 18mm Birch so not to different in-terms of the price of the two materials. I think i'll wait a week or two and mull this one over before starting it.
