Hi All,
Asked Missus to get me a magazine this morning whilst she was out shopping. She came back with the first edition of WOODWORKING PLANS & PROJECTS . A new mag with great potential .

That`s all, Koolwabbit

Maybe a rehash but I like it, good ideas for projects with plain english instructions and well set out. At the moment I`ll give it 5 STARS.

I bought a copy. It is a new concept in woodworking magazines!! yes, they feature woodworking projects and the odd tool review.
Now where have I seen that before?
The projects featured were pretty weak - I let them off as its the first issue. But there again, as it is the first issue maybe they should of pulled out all the stops and got some cracking projects to launch the mag with a bang. :?
And printing old Fine Woodworking articles is annoying - especially if you have the original Fw magazine and a Taunton book with the article reprinted
There are some amazing amateur woodworkers out there-get them in print and stop hashing old articles and printing weak, butt ugly projects. The world has seen enough spice rack projects.......
Rant over,

Philly :D

Hi all.

Just got a copy today,i agree with you Koolwabbit,,i like the look of it.
Just starting out making things, it covers the sort of things which are in easy reach of me making.
I use to buy furniture and cabinet making, but the items they were making were far beyond anything i could do, not to mention the tools and machines too,not everyone has a couple of grand to buy these things, and the room to do it in. So stopped buying that one.

So its good to see a magazine that caters for your "everyday" wood worker.
I'll shall certainly keep buying it.

Got a flyer from GMC about it and thought exactly the same. How many clones of the same magazine do we need?! And will GMC continue their bad habit of repeating the same article in more than one title? Bet they will.

It's also cheap and lazy. If that's what's on offer then frankly I'm too cheap and lazy to buy it.

Cheers, Alf

Mark - there are certain aspects about F&C that are true in that it's pitch is directly at the professional end of the market, and they do admit that. The projects in the mag can be varied,eg in this months issue, making a fairly straightforward table with tapered legs to a very complex alter table by Robert Ingham. One thing you won't find is any 'spice rack' or 'carve a shire horse in two hours' type of projects.
Machinery reviews tend to be high endish and repetitive as well. There was a poll conducted by the mag a while back where I suggested that there ought to be more reviews on lower end machinery and some information on say, the perils of dust in a workshop...both appear in this month's issue. In all, IMHO it's one of the best British mags with enough content to cater for the professional and enough also to inspire the amateur - Rob

When I last checked there were about a dozen UK based woody mags (Inc. router & turning titles) I think that is too many and (As has been stated on here many times) such a number aiming at a (relatively) small readership & the quality is bound to suffer.

Also, for me, the postage of this new one for Euroland is 43.20 for 12 issues. With the e/rate so good now on the dollar I can get 21 issues of FWW for only a few quid more, so why would I buy this one??.

I think Philly did sum it up well. Of course it may improve over time, maybe I'll pick up a copy of the newstand when in UK, but I have to say that on past experience I think it unlikely.
