Hiya all, on Sat.13th Dec. I am having a full days instruction from one of our top Turners Glenn Lucas, who is featured in January's editon of Woodturning, Issue No 196. I will try to get some photos of his set up. Putting them on here is an other matter thanks to Tam I will be having my first attempt at posting a picture.
Since I got the call I'm like a dog that has discovered he has two!
Just imagine at 69 3/4 I'm having my first lesson. I suppose I will have to look for a more updated forum after this. But I wont forget you all I'll still remember my roots.    :D :D   and if anyone of you need help just ask and I will get back to you as soon as I can. 8) 8) 8) . REgards Boy Mr Malone

Wow ! Thats fantastic Boysie ... I read the magazine article just this week about Glen ... he looks to be a fantastic turner..

And you absolutely MUST do the photo's onto here ( before you leave us for the 'pro's only forum :p :p :p )... that will be great to see.

Hope you have a great time, learn loads, and return to pass on all the new-found knowledge ! 8) That really should be an excellent experience.

Enjoy, and all the best to you...
sounds absolutely magic ! 8) 8) 8) 8)

Have a great day Boysie :D
And don't be afraid to ask as many questions as you like,no matter how daft they might seem.
Make the most of the time you have with a pro.

Gret Stuff Eugene !!!

Can't wait to see your pics.you lucky lucky man !!!

All the best

Loz
..

Mornin' Eugene.

Just what you need to get you right over the edge, you have no chance of recovery now. Make the most of every minute you have with him. I see Glen Lucas is one of the demonstrators at the AWGB Loughborough seminar in 2009.

Just a small change to your photo posting instructions. Go to this post 'How to Pointers' there is a addition about the Photbucket coding. You don't have to change the code, it just makes the display of your photo tidier. (Courtesy JPT & Paul.J )

C`mon Eugene how did it go???
I`ve just had a very enjoyable day with Gerry Marlow and got all sorts of tips not seen in books if only my memory could keep up with the ruddy rest of me
Cheers
Steve

Hiya all my good FRIENDS, I wont be leaving the forum just yet. Had a very enjoyable day, from 9.30am to 5.30pm. Far too long for me I was in agony for last couple of hrs. Would I go again, Yes if I was in the whole of my health and wanted to be an expert Bowl Turner.
We were shown the whole process from the tree to the finished Bowl. It is amazing to see how he can have his timber ready for production in less than 4 weeks. anyone who is into turning and has to wait a couple of years for timber to be ready for working would love the whole thing.
The lesson was on how to turn an 8" bowl from blank to finish. In the process we were shown how to sharpen tools and little things which make for better tooling and quicker and faster ways to reach the ultimate object which was to turn a Bowl. Not having had the benifet of the boys on here who give a total picture of their work in sequence the other lads really enjoyed the hands on thing. It was a begineers class and thanks to this forum and a few DVDs I was way ahead of the possey.
I went down to the Shed this morning and turned a Christmas candle holder which was given a 10 out of 10 by Herself, and that after only one lesson. Will post Pics later when I get a camera   .REgards just Boysie

Well done Eugene, glad you had a very tiring day :D
Just glad it was worth it,and hope it solved some of your problems you might have been having.Things can only get better now :D
Looking forward to the piccys

Glad you enjoyed it Eugene!
Problem I had when attending my one dayer was taking it all in and these RPT boys (and some others on this forum) make it all look so damn easy :x
Regards
Steve

Hiya all, The class consisted of 3 two complete begineers and me. It was a bowl turning class only. With the help of people here and some DVDs I have turned many bowls, as a matter of fact I had bought 10 roughed out bowls from Glenn some mths. agowhich I only had to finish off. He only lives 2mls. away,I thought I had done very well with the rough outs until yesterday. I was shown how to sharpen my goughes so that I could make one complete cut down into center. Before this I was useing scrapers to finish insides Hopefully I can replecate the bevels on the goughes again.
I also got to use a new Vicmarc 300 lathe which If I was some years younger and in the whole of my health I might consider buying. Reason for doubt fixed head. So I am totally happy with my 1624-44 Nova.So that was two things that I learned which set my mind at ease.
Glenn has over the years as most of you dedicated turners have picked up many jigs and other little tricks which he showed us which can save time and money.Like six to eight tools is nearly enough for a turner. When I showed him my six 1/2" goughes 4 3/8"gouges 3 spindle gouges and my scrapers 4scews 4 parting tools which was all that I could get into the bag and be able to carry it,he said why have you got all thoes I said Blister keeps selling them to me
Anyway I was ok for a few hours then the old bones began to ache and I was looking fwd. to the finish . We turned and sanded and finished our bowls and I've had my first lesson from a real Pro and a gentleman as well. You know what it looks so easy when when you know what your doing. REgards and best wishes for Christmas I hope you all get what you want, its still only Boysie I'm afraid

Eugene

Pleased you had a good day

Just a point to note , your comment " I said Blister keeps selling them to me "

If not I may just be able to help out

Mornin' all.

C'mon Blister let the poor guy off the hook.

Glad you had a good instructive time at school Eugene. As you say it is so much easier with some at your shoulder pointing things out. As all say, we are now only waiting for the photo's.
