Hello there fellas,

I have a small Jet mini lathe which I have previously just placed on my work bench when using this for turning small knobs, dowels etc.

The lathe is quite heavy and I have not found it necessary to bolt it down. However, I was given a chunk of burr oak (only 8cm square and about 20cm long) and thought I would have a go at making a small candle stick.

Set up as usual and turned on the lathe and it nearly took off dancing across my bench.

On the basis that I may now need to bolt the lathe down what is a good temporary way to do this. I thought about bolting the lathe to a bench hook and holding this in my vice?

Any ideas or suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

Cheers, Tony.

Or fasten the lathe to a baseboard, and clamp to the bench.

My scrollsaw and belt-and-disc sander both vibrated and wandered across the bench - I drilled some holes in the benchtop to match the mounting holes, pushed some dowels in,and they just sit on the dowels;stops them moving, and if required, can be removed to allow full use of the benchtop.

I've got mine literally screwed onto the bench. Works fine so far. The limit to size (9" dia.) means that you can turn quite serious off centred stuff. Look at my latest posting as that was turned on the mini Jet

Thanks for the help fellas.

I have an idea in mind to solve this problem and plan to use the locating dowel idea within my design. I will post some pics when work is completed.

I have found my little Jet lathe to be just perfect. It is a solid well made machine. A good first lathe I would say.

Cheers, Merry Christmas all, Tony
