I cut out the piece of boxwood, planed the edges straight, then marked around it on the sole.

Thank you. Now there's a challenge, planing a piece of wood that small?
And how thick should the insert be?

For a thumb plane, I would say something like 1-2mm. For a bigger plane, maybe 2-4mm, it's not critical.

Here's the latest plane I've made. The wood is a wedged shaped bit of scrap maple, the grain and growth rings are all "wrong" but it doesn't matter, I'm just trying out a different plane shape. Blade width is 8mm.

I didn't take any photos for the next bit which was to saw the abutments with a piercing saw and then tidy up with a chisel.

I then started on the wedge, here's the plane assembled so far, 20p for scale.

Ends rounded, surfaces cleaned up, all off the blade.

Started on finishing the wedge, rounded the sole, took a test shaving.

Then final tidying up, applied finished.

I call it a no 9 as it's my ninth one.

Going by the established numbering system for planes, that should be a -9.

Marvelous what can be done with a few tools (what you can do with them anyway!), very impressive.
