Hi all,

I found a powercraft mortiser on eBay. I think it's the 370w model. Unfortunately it has only one chisel bit. I need to get a few more but my research online has shown that the chisels are quite specific to each model. I.e, I think I need to get the particular set of chisel bits for it to fit the mortiser. Is this correct? Can someone lead me to a shop that sells the correct mortise chisel for the powercraft 370w?

Also seems like the powercraft mortiser is no longer available anywhere.

Regards,

Alex

Hi Phil.

Thanks for the reply. There are 2 parts to the chisel as I know. Its the drill bit and the square chisel part. Which diameter are you referring to? I can then check with the seller.

I have looked around amazon.co.uk and some of the buyers have said that the chisels they purchased for their machine won't fit which lead me to believe that these chisels are machine specific. Which is no good if the mortiser is already out of production.

Regards,

Alex

The diameter of the round part on top of the square part - the actual drill bit goes into the chuck. When I got my morticer it came with a sleeve to fit other makes of cutters.

The cheaper end of the mortisers use 19mm/ 3/4'' shank bits. The more expensive ones use 13/16'' bits.

Depends on the details but most morticer chisels fit most machines but you may need a collet for some combinations.

@ Roughcut - The seller informed me its 19mm shank diameter. Thanks for machine confirmation. But will the bits from Machinemart fit as their shank diameter are below 13mm?

@ Carlb40 - Haha, looks like the powercraft is a lower end mortiser machine. But hopefully it function well enough doing what its suppose to do.

@ Jacob - Thanks fo rthe info. Where would I get the collet to fit smaller shank diameter?

LOL

Well my jet morticer is from the lower end of the market. However i received a brass bush for mine by mistake which allows me to use both size chisels :)

Alex,
Both brands of the mortise chisels I mentioned will fit.
They both have a 19mm end on the chisel part which locates into a 19mm I/d sleeve on the machine.
But the drill shank diameter is different between those two brands (Screwfix & Machine Mart), that does not matter because the drill shank on the mortise chisel fits into a keyed chuck on the Power Craft machine which I believe has a 1/2" or 13mm capacity.

These are the specifications on the Power craft Mortiser:
Motor 230v 50Hz
Speed 2800 rpm
Mortising Chisel Range 6mm-13mm
Drill Chuck Capacity 13mm
Max mortising depth 76mm

So according to the manufacture this machine is only really recommended for mortising up to 13mm.
And be careful not to purchase any mortise chisels with a drill shank diameter over 13mm as they will not fit in the chuck.
