Lip and spur (?) bits for old handbrace

I need to drill a few 20mm holes into the end grain of some oak and also crossgrain in more oak...over a length of about 12" or so. I'm trying to source drill bits that fit into the old-fashioned handbrace..the ones with a sort of tapering square shank but don't know the exact term to search for.

When you say 20mm you mean what?
Cos it ain't gonna be metric.

Personally I'd buy some cheapo spade bits to run in a power drill & chuck them afterwards.

Sandvik make auger bits which can be used in both hand braces and (slow speed) electric drills called "Combination Auger Bits", although you may have to settle for a 19mm one. I've use them, they work well enough in a brace but require a slow drill speed for safe drilling.

If you have an SDS+ machine, then these work well in oak, thats what I use for peg holes and getting the waste out of mortices. Do have some square taper shank augers and a brace knocking about as well.

I have used axminsters auger bits succesfully into the end-grain of beech so maybe this could be an option rather than a lip and spur?

Does anyone actually make a lip an spur bit at 20mm? I've got a 16mm one and that's way too big to use in anything other than a drill press

Simbles sell the exact size you need of Auger bit, but they ain't cheap

Wealden do one in 20mm but as it does not have a reduced shank you either need a gut buster drill or a big drill press. Largest I have is 5/8" with a reduced shank to 1/2"

Lurker - 20mm diameter - could be slightly over if imperial. Length - ideally 12" long.

many thanks to everyone for the links to various SDS bits. I really want something that I can control slowly and so not too keen on power drills.

Possibly the gutbuster drill (if that's what I think it is)

Gut busters usually don't have much in the way of speed control. My SDS+ (bosch multidrill) has variable speed and a clutch, handy if you get the bit stuck.

Ah..the gut buster isn't what I thought it was! It could have been an excellent description of the manual brace that you stick in your stomach to give a bit of oomph :lol:

Anyway, Axminster to the rescue. They are called a Jennings Pattern Screw Bit.

For end grain a Gedge pattern with upturned spurs is the ideal, but naturally they're not made any more. :roll:
