A lovely box from a fellow UKworkshoper arrived yesterday, got round to opening it today and there are 3 lovely boards, Cherry, Walnut and Oak, thinking of using the Walnut and Oak to make a box for a friend and possibly use the cherry to make a bowl blank unless anyone has any better suggestions

A sad day, 4 semi mature silver birch had to be felled to make way for a new classroom building that is being build in the summer, a lack of storage space and not much time to process it meant I could only justify keeping the trunks, 2 of the trees had short fat stems that are about 6 foot long, the other 2 were closer to 10 feet so I had the tree surgeon cut them in half, he was going g to split them all down the middle but the first one had something in the wood that killed his saw chain. The shape of some will produce some very nice live edge bowls in a few years. They're all sealed with PVA, now I've just got to try somewhere to move them where the academy aren't gonna complain about them.

An enjoyable day was had watching a wreck of a building get ripped down whilst using my electric chainsaw to split the birch trunks through the length, there's some gorgeous feathering in the crotch areas

Just had some logs dropped off this morning.
Diameter of the larger ones is 24" (600mm) approx.
Nothing too fancy, just Monterey pine (Radiata Pine) https://www.wood-database.com/radiata-pine/
I'll be getting a second load later today

It might end up being construction lumber but it was a good price, even with a tip for the driver.

I've spent my last few days sorting through some of the stuff I've had in the garden for a while, amazing how quick time passes, realised whilst sorting it that the mountain ash is more then 3yrs old now, one piece has the most amazing spalting, hope I can keep it in one piece, the rest is just as gorgeous.
Here's a few pieces, the last 2 pics are of an ash that was felled across the road in January last year, the stack is waiting to be cut, the stuff in the shed was left whole if there were no cracks, those with cracks had the chainsaw put through the biggest crack, resealed and stacked, there's about 6 inches of space behind them all to allow air flow.

We were away in East Sussex this weekend at a gig …at a very nice country house venue. At the rear of the venue were 4 100+ year old oak trees and around the base of one of them were a collection of 2ft lengths of a fallen bough. A quick chat with the owners and I had a nice crotch piece - potential leg or two for a waterfall table



After bark removal, wire brushing and treating the ends with Tung oil/white spirit mix




The piece is 600 high and 600 across …the limbs are 200mm in dia …..has been in the ‘pile’ for 2 years

I managed to get this stack of Cherry about 8 years ago ...

It was somewhere between 1.5 and 2 steres (a French measurement of volume) ... and after some haggling I only paid 1200 Euros for it.

It was 50 years old at least when I got it - and the guy was selling it as he was moving and had to downsize.

There are some really thick pieces @8 cm ... but most around 25-32

Some of it is a bit wormholed and/or cracked ... but still good value for what I want.

I find Cherry is really nice to work with, and planes lovely.

I have used about a third of it .. so have plenty left for projects ... as long as you like Cherry !!

No change yet mate, V is back from her dog/house sitting at the end of the week giving us 4 weeks to get enough done to satisfy the clowns I work for, one room is full of bigger items so will start on that as we could clear it quickly and then will have the 2 spare rooms accessible leaving the main bedroom to do which is the worst of them all. For now I'm concentrating on today and will worry about tomorrow once the reinspection is done at then end of july and I know how things stand
