Leaving unfinished oak on a north facing wall?

I want to leave a set of external oak doors unfinished on a north facing wall. Obviously they won’t be as prone to UV damage, but is there any risk to them taking on too much moisture if they never see direct sunlight?

Have a look at existing wood facing North. Is it green with mould or moss ? If so then there’s your answer.

Good advice that, I’ll check. What if it is, does it mean it needs to be protected with something?

Had a look, and it appears moss free. Is it worth using a CPER to give the wood some protection, or is there really no advantage to that over just leaving it unfinished?

Clear Penetrating Epoxy Resin. It’s used as undercoat to paint (like the thread on here about the bow window) or under varnish on boats.

I’m not sure if I’m trying to fix a problem that doesn’t exist though?! There have been unfinished oak doors on churches and the like for over 100 years and they are coping fine!

I would suggest:

I make a lot of Oak joinery, some will get a coat of Osmo, if requested, with the caveat it will need annual maintenance, mostly I won't, just let it weather naturally, its going to last longer than my "lifetime" guarantee, I offer, that's for sure.

I would say though, it is better solution to have any door under a porch canopy of some sort.

That Hoj. The porch isn’t much of an option on the garage doors, but I’ll be able to get a bit of an overhang on the gable of my actual porch build.
