I'd like to thank everyone for their valuable time in responding.
Just thought I'd update you - I found a (practically new, still in its box!) Makita LS1019L on ebay for £270. Its soooo AWESOME!! A bit past the budget I set myself but I don't think its ever been used and at less than half price I took the plunge. I'm now a very happy little bunny
For those reading this thread who like me have limited space and funds but are looking for a decent mitre saw, I would say preserver with the second hand market. Some decent bits of kit do randomly appear at relatively affordable prices. I did also find the same saw (without the laser) on gumtree for £220, it was definitely used, but still looked like it was in good condition with a new blade. I payed the extra just because I had been given some birthday money. So yes I lucked out, but for those reading this thread who are still looking to buy an affordable mitre saw with space saving forward facing rails (and for what it's worth) my conclusions are;
- The DeWalt is probably the one to go for, it got the most votes in this thread at least. It's small, compact and good build quality and accuracy. Its not the cheapest new but there are quite a few secondhand ones on the market. BUT it does NOT have a trench cutting facility.
- Next I think the Hyundai and HiKoki got a positive mention. My view (and it is just an opinion based on nothing but internet research - no first hand experience) is that these when bought new are affordable and space saving plus when setting up if they aren't accurate you can just send them back! But if you are lucky you'll get a decent machine.
- At the other end of the market you have the Excel and Rutlands machines which on paper fill the brief and are very cheap BUT I think the accuracy and build quality will reflect that. Again a conclusion based on nothing but a gut feeling.
Other things to consider are blade size and blade quality - I've always thought you can make decent saw better with a quality blade. The number of bevels - single or double may also sway your choice. As well as the length / capacity of cuts achievable with each saw and if they have laser / shadow line features.
