Lathe help required please

I have been offered a Britannia company manufacturers&patentees Colchester.england cleave&son oldham st. Mancheste
lathe they want £150 for it so my first question is are they any good ?? and second are they worth £150 and third as i have no experience with a lathe should i go for something a little more modern

Some pictures may help? I doubt anyone wants to be trawling the internet with that masive brand name. If its complete and in useable condition then 150 sounds fair. But i have no idea what lathe it is.

I was just about to mention the same thing......!!!!!

no use for wood I am afraid.

If you are interested in wood turning, I would either join a club, or have a couple of lessons before you buy anything. That way, you can see whether it is for you and try some bits out.

Thank,s for the thumbs up and my farther in law does a little wood turning i think as you say i should have a few lessons first

It may be a wood lathe, A Pattern Makers Lathe, dependant upon turning requirements could be a very desirable beast if it is.

One main difficulty would be getting modern chucks etc. compatible with spindle nose, not the best scenario for a new turner.

I would love to have a Pattern makers Lathe Bed and saddle associated with my headstock.

All the benefits of a wood lathe and metal lathe tool application in one beast.

Traverse racks and worms designed to cope better with wood dust and debris. Really wrong to say manufactured with a less finesse than a metal lathe but that probably gives a general impression one would get if seen.
Enables precise parallel cylinders and boring to be accomplished with machine control of cutting depth.
And precise angle generation with compound slide.
Richard Findley's lathe has a Pattern Makers Saddle and Cross Slide which he uses occasionally for production turning.
