Living a sheltered life on the IOW I have never seen a No 3 smoother in the flesh so I have been on the hunt at boot sales. At the New Forest BS I spotted these two, and as I couldn't decided which one was best I bought both for £15 the pair. One according to straight edge and square is better than t'other so I think I did the right thing, even though they are only 20 years old max. The came from Cams Hill Tech, but have had little or no use.

Actually I wanted an excuse to practice posting a photo so I hope this works.

That's really strange. I too lusted after a No.3 for ages - I put this down to not having one. I got one eventually from a bootfair...same old stuff...in need of TLC but fundamentally sound and flat/square.

I must admit - it fits the gap for it on the shelf well...

That's where it stays mostly....

Nice score G.....bargain! Make one out of two that is the best and then stick the other on FleaBay...you should make back what you paid for the pair easily.

Hi,

Nice find!

I ended up with 3 No3s at one point untill I sold 2 of them, I sold them on here after tuning them up.

I agree, my most used planes are a block, a jack and a jointer, probably in that order. Although smoothers are probably the most often bought planes (and I have a couple) to me they are among the least useful, but I know others will disagree. I find it interesting that the late great Alan Peters reckoned to use only a block plane and a number 7 as does the tutor whose courses I attend at West Dean College.

Of course tool lust affects many of us, not least me, but cold analysis will, I suspect reveal that most of us tend to reach for a very small number of planes on a day to day basis, no matter how many we own. Am I right Jim?

Hi

You think you have a problem.

I may have a "compulsive plane buying addiction".

After buying quite selectively on e-bay and then not quite so selectively, I followed this up by visits to the local car boot sale buying some delectable old Stanleys in first rate condition plus a serious bargain of a large toolbox at a local auction with five bench planes.

I have ended up with two No.7s, three No.6s, two No.5 1/2s, two No.5s, three 4 1/2s, four No.4s; but only one No.3. Most have been been lapped on float glass and sharpened on the Tormek and waterstones which is satisfying given the poor state of most items.

I feel rather like a Management Consultant who knows 50 ways to make love; but has no girl friend. Time to get a serious project! Certainly I need counselling as I am not a collector!

My only consolation is that the total cost of the planes was probably less than a single L-N No.7.

Hi, Richard

I have posted this pic before, but it does prove you don't have a serious problem.

I have sold quite a few since then, but I did find some lurking in the workshop after I took that pic.

Hi Pete

Perhaps we should do counselling together.

I think I just beat you on the number of metal bench planes but am ashamed of the rest of my collection (obsession).

Useful picture to show SWMBO as now I know that this actually quite normal.

But how about hand saws !!!!!!!!! :D ?

All the best
Richard

Hi, Richard

Hand saws? only 20 or so

I think I have slipped over the slope of no return, when I looked up my No 3's for dating purposes I discovered there's a No 2 smoothing plane, a rare beast it would seem, again I have never seen one so the hunt is on.

I did walk away from a Stanley rabbet & fillister plane on the same stall though. Try next week if you want it.

How does SWIMBO know? And if she does, why doesn't she accept the obvious. You are a closet 'multi-tasker' thus proving to be the exception to the rule!

If you've started dating your planes there really is no hope - Ive always prefered dating women.

My Missus will only let me date planes

Leave the two No.3s together in a warm cupboard overnight and see what happens...you never know you may give birth to a little block plane....

That's what I tell the missus...

She is blonde.....

I used to have a monogamous relationship with handplanes (just a useless 1970s Stanley) - I've heard that relationship works best with a No.7.

But lately I've become a promiscuous plane **** (if a male can be a **** - but you know what I mean). Most are just one night stands (buy 'em second hand, check 'em over, cast them aside)...

And my missus has only found out about a few of them...

Cheers, Vann.

The edge of the cliff is close; the scope is great.

There are Stanley and Record No. 2s which go for hundreds and a Stanley No.1 which will fetch thousands.

What about Record Stay Set versions and Stanley Bedrock and Corrugated as well as Bedrock Corrugated. If you include both Record and Stanley and empty your Bank account, I am sure you can easily exceed 50 bench planes without any repeats.

How could SWMBO object if it keeps you indoors!
