I now build formers from 18mm MDF, with the ribs on 4 inch centres. These ribs have minimal bracing between, usually only two inches deep (from the surface skin), but on 6ish inch centres.
This is then covered in 8mm bendy ply and 1.5mm aeroply. The secret I use to stop it imploding is to fill the interior of the mould with expanding foam. The result is a form which is easy to build using conventional tools, lightweight (relative of course!) and strong.
I have also seen someone use a form like yours with only a brace at each end, and one in the middle.
They then inflated a second bag inside the form (in the vacuum bag) the counter the pressure. Worked a treat.
