Hegner Single Speed

I'm sure you're all sick of these questions! I am a complete beginner but having read the stickies I see the Hegner name mentioned quite a bit. There's one for sale on FB about an hour away from me (linked above). However, it doesn't look to be in great condition and has a broken switch.

All I really need a saw for is splitting pen blanks and make fine cuts to insert 0.6mm steel into.

Is it worth considering the one linked above or am I better getting a new, cheaper saw with good blades?

I would go and have a look at it. It looks to be an earlier model than mine (different table design). If it runs smoothly then it could be worth it.

As for the switch not working I can give two suggestions:

1. Buy a foot pedal to switch the scroll saw on and off. The switch on the scroll saw would need to be switched on anyway. It’s on my list of things to add as it will allow me to turn the scroll saw on and off while keeping both hands on the workpiece.

2. I am aware from his website that @scrimper says he replaced the switch on his Hegner for not a lot of money. He may be able to provide further information on this.

Thank you for all the information - much appreciated. The foot switch is a great idea. If I can get a decent second hand machine for the same price I'd pay for a new cheap machine I'd rather go for a good SH one.

Condition looks to be rusty so a few hours of cleaning up would be needed.
It's definitely been left sitting for a long time by the looks of it. I am a little concerned it's beyond my abilities to get it into decent shape since I've never owned a scroll saw so wouldn't even know where to begin if it needs any parts beyond the switch that needs replaced

You could watch the video below to see what a similar scroll saw sounds like. The machine in the video is variable speed but when it’s at the highest speed that is basically what a single speed version should sound like:

@scrimper also has a review of his Hegner:

Also if you look at the @DailovespoonsThomas YouTube channel there are many videos of a Hegner 2S (single speed) being used along with a review and hints/tips.

These may help you get an appreciation of how a Hegner should perform so you can compare it if you visit and see the machine on FB.

Hope the above helps.

That's great - many thanks! I'll check those videos out and see if I feel like it's worth a run over to check it out
