My garage is made up of single skin concrete block, no insulation. The apex roof is lined with 50mm kingspan seconds. The windows are double glazed but thats it, no fancy insulation and an up and over garage door.

I used to have a woodburner in the shop but I could never get the hang of regulating the temperature. I like to work in 65 degrees or so and I often ended up in well over 80. I also didn't like the amount of space it took up allowing for safety.

I have a very unusual system now. There are three 500mm square radiators spaced out along one wall (the workshop is 13m x 4m). This is hooked up to two solar panels on the roof. This works great when the sun is out even this time of year. The panels are used to heat the swimming pool for the rest of the year.

To top up the heat on rainy days or if I want to work in the evening I have an old chimnea with a home made copper coil down the chimney. This is connected into the heat circuit by a system of three valves. One burn of offcuts is enough to get the radiators hot for a good days work.

Thats a big THANKS to you all. Once again UK workshop comes up trumps.  .
Think I`ll concentrate for now on insulating the roof and when I`ve more time have a go with the walls. I like the look of the stoves you advised especially the R2.
I`ve been asked by SWMBO what I`d like for crimbo so hmmmmm...
Cheers
Steve
