Who said Record planes don't fetch much? This grubby little No 2 just went for £143.

I couldn't have that in a collection (even if I had one) it needs to be put out of its misery surely. A nice clean one sold a few months ago for £220

Record #2s aren't common. The average price in March 2003 according to Harrison was £130-200. Pretty suspect out-of-focus piccy though. :-s

That sounds right if it had a corrugated sole. That would make it one of the most rare of the Stanley bench planes.

I suppose it's because I'm not a collector, but if I was going to buy a number 1 or 2 for a 3 figure sum it would be a Lie-Nielsen. Why should rarity make something valuable? Stupid question, I know. :roll:
If I had bought that Record #2 I would have to give it the complete Jarviser makeover and paint job, and set the belt sander on that nasty lever cap, which would probably reduce its value to zero, but at least it would be shiny!

I agree with Alf - that photograph is suspiciously awful. Either the vendor is useless with a camera, or it's deliberate. All the photos are out of focus.

The Record 02 was a copy of the Stanley #2 but was improved because of the much better frog design. The frog was of similar construction to the other planes in the range being similar to the Stanley type 11-15. A very rare plane that is rarely seen. Only available pre-war.
