How about a lowering thoracic pod as in Thunderbird 2

Didn't thunderbird 2's pod stay still and thunderbird 2 lift up instead? Still an interesting idea, which I think would give the cleanest exit for the soldiers but how could I mechanically do it?

Wind it up and down by twirling the tail (shaft from tail to front, with pulleys to raise & lower belly) ?
