does anyone know how the ring fence (cheap version) is fixed to the moulding guard (cheap version)? is it fixed directly? is the depth of mould adjusted using the forward and back adjustment of the guard? cant quite make it out from the pictures.

The expensive one is an Aigner. The Felder one I referred to earlier, at around £40.00, fixes to the guard for curved work. There are steel guides either side of the opening and the ring fence clamps onto these. Yes, you adjust by moving the lot forward and back but it's easy. If you've never used one, you may not be aware that it is an eccentric shape with the narrowest part having a mark so you line the edge of the cutter with this mark. Being eccentric means you can gently roll the jig into the cutting area with no sudden jolts. As Mr G says, they are more versatile. I have a 140mm rebate block and matching guide ring which does for most simple shaping. I have a few other rings but it's when you find a need for some other size and are faced with a long wait for delivery and extra expense that you appreciate having it to hand. Characteristically tight fisted of them not to include this bit of bent steel with your 13 grand machine.

innit john,

thanks for the fence fitting info too, i'm sure they'll send a basic, near incomprihensible set of instructions with it.....i'm sure i'll work it out.

its a pity they dont have someone who knows how to mould on the other end of the phone.

i've got two deliveries already on their way from austria, now looking to pay another 25 to deliver this piece of bent steel. oh and they're gonna send another truck to pick up the old sliding table. what a waste!

c'est la vie!

What is "eccentric" is the centre of the ring fence relative to the cutter block, with, as you say, a mark at the point nearest to the cutter. The fence itself may be circular but has to have a larger diameter than the cut.
Depends what you are doing but you may not need templates or jigs. There are lots of ways of doing things!

I would forget the ring set & bearing imho, and get the Felder euro hood & the adjustable guide plate. This allows you to make fine adjustments of any size you wish.
It works in a similar way to the Agnier version which Felder sell.

You might on certain circumstances not even need to make a template.

yes i can see that with the ring fence, a template is only needed if the whole of the face/edge of the work is machined. it's all becoming clear!

thanks for yopur help guys,

jeff

Don't forget a templated jig is required for small or thin parts like glazing bars. Like at the tops of these doors.

It is only complicated if you don't understand the 'how' to! As for the abrupt bought of constipation the Shellix type cutter block will not do your moldings, just planing and rebates, so not much bowel help there!

The best spindle molder I have ever used for both straight and ring fence work was a old Wadkin EQ, solid, heavy, no vibration and what we did with it used to scare the boss!
I hope that when my new 'shop gets up and running the Felder kit we have planned will be up to the task. The Felder machines I used in 2000/1
in germany were a pleasure to use.

ordred the ring fence guide today, the guide rings might go back....undecided till after i've used the ring fence.

must admit, i'd rather go for the aigner kit...just can't justify it. but it does inspire more confidence.

make sure your felder stuff is properly set up! are you getting seperates?

all the best,

jeff

Yes, all separates except the planer/thicknesser. We are not going for mass volumes of work but rather the bespoke end and more challenging projects.

Let us know how you get on with your new fence.

Rob.

will do rob.

good luck with your new shop.

pm me if you want to chat about the felder setup. i'm reasonably knowledgable now! certainly no expert yet though!

all the best.

jeff
