Garden Table (Now Finished)

For some time now my wife has been talking about buying a garden table, and for the same amount of time I have been steering her away from garden centres or any other place that sells them.
Then coming home the other day I find this oak timber left outside my workshop.
I had a phone call the next day and it came from a friend of a friend who was having a clear out.

So now was my chance to earn some brownie points and make her one.

I first cut six 12" lengths on the table saw and mitred the ends on my mitre trimmer.

The ends were then biscuit joined, glued and clamped

Now to make three legs and a top.

Cut six 29" lengths and mitred on the table saw for the legs

glued and clamped using "fast grab instant PU glue" I like this glue as it will allow you to get on with the job without having to wait 24 hours for it to go off as with PVA.

After each one had been left to harden for about 20 minutes they were removed from the clamps and tapered on the band saw.

A couple of passes over the planer and they are ready to fix to the top frame

I next cut the slats and end pieces for the top

The mortesses were cut using the router and a home made jig and the tenons were done on the table saw

These have now got to be glued and clamped.

I would have liked to make the top hexhagonal but I don't have the skills to cut the mortesses at the correct angle. (Must make a jig :roll: )

Completed the top and with it being square it looked complete rubbish. It didn't look right and it certainly wasn't stable.

So I had to make a hexhagonal one whether I liked it or not.


And this is the result.

I will have to give it several coats of oil before it is ready for use.
